Social Constructivism
The suggestion that since the mind is active in knowledge acquisition
and that observation requires the epistemological conclusion that we cannot
know reality, is a cornerstone of constructivism and is based on the
assumption that the empiricist tradition has correctly delineated the problem
of knowledge. (Empiricism is the theory that all knowledge originates in
experience as opposed to rationalism, the theory that reason is in itself a source
of knowledge superior to and independent of sense perceptions).
The constructivists get caught up in the problem of appearing to say
that all truths are merely matters of agreement or merely “constructions”
which dooms them to a radical and untenable form of relativism, a position of
solipsism in which each individual constructs his own world. The problem is
that truth by convention does not work, or the convention governing truth is
that truth is not a matter of convention (Howe & Berv, 2000).

A Different Approach

Constructivist Pedagogy
Constructivists suggest that teaching and learning based on behaviorist
principles have as their aim to get students to acquire “correct knowledge”.
Of course constructivists do not accept the idea of “correct knowledge’ and
wish to replace it with the goal of personal construction of meaning (i.e.,
“understanding”) which demands and fosters an active learner.
For constructivists, learners are intrinsically motivated to learn because
they wish to make sense of their context through a constructive process.
(What about unmotivated learners?) The active learner participates in the
learning process by generating new mental or social engagements with an
environment. Since the active learner is thought to shape understanding itself
and active learning is adopted as a goal, social constructivists tend to suggest
that no predetermined curriculum should be imposed on the student, nor
should teachers convey a body of knowledge to students through direct
instruction.

Conclusion
The two main reasons I am not a constructivist should be clear. The
philosophical idea is not good and the approach does not really offer
anything good for the classroom or the student. In terms of the philosophy,
to paraphrase Orwell, the idea is so ridiculous that only an intellectual would
believe it.
But I want to add a bit more, and do it by borrowing from others.
Despite serious problems … in the epistemological and educational
aspects of radical constructivism, … this philosophy remains seductive
to educators ..(because it) fits with contemporary politically correct
language about construction of gender, self, and identity… resonating
with a popular anti-establishment, anti-authoritarian ideology and
ironic attitude… It lends support to broad-scale attacks on behaviorist
psychology, … suggest teachers ought to be free of … disciplined
