ASSIGNMENT 5

MTH204A, 2017-18

1. Let R be a ring in which every x ∈ R satisfy x2 = x. Prove that R must be

commutative.
2. Let R be a ring and let I be a left ideal of R. Let Ann(I) = {a ∈ R : ax =
0 for all a ∈ R}. Prove that Ann(I) is a two sided ideal of R. State and prove a
similar assertion for right ideals.
3. Show that every non-zero ring homomorphism from a field to a ring is injective.
4. Determine all ring homomorphisms from R to R.
5. Let R be a ring and I be an additive subgroup of R. Put [R : I] := {x ∈ R|rx ∈
I for all r ∈ R|} and [I : R] := {x ∈ R|xr ∈ I for all r ∈ R|}.
(i) Show that [R : I] is a left ideal and [I : R] is a right ideal.
(ii) If I is right ideal then show that [R : I] is a two sided ideal and if I is left ideal
then show that [I : R] is a two sided ideal.
6 If every proper ideal of a commutative ring R with unity is a prime ideal then
show that R is a field.
7. Let R be a ring. What are all two sided ideals of the n by n matrix ring Mn (R)
?
8. Find all the units in the ring of Gaussian integers Z[i].
9. Show that R[X]/(X 2 + 1) is isomorphic to C.
10. Show that a finite integral domain is a field.
11. Find all the units in the ring of integral quaternions Z[i, j, k].
12. Let R be a commutative ring with unity and G be a group. Show that G is a
subgroup of R[G]× . If G has an element of finite order then show that R[G] has a
zero divisor.
13. Let R be a commutative ring with unity and R[[X]] be the ring of formal power
series in X over R. Find all units in R[[X]].
