Learning Outcomes: The Child will be able to assemble an earth worm habitat.

S.37-48.10- Observe and describe and characteristics and needs of plants
and animals.
S.37-48.9 Begin to describe and identify the similarities, categories, and
different structures of familiar plants and animals.

Materials to collect/prepare:
 White paper.
 Crayons
 Coke bottle
 Dirt
 Rocks
 Sand
 Earth worms
 Coffee grounds
 Paper towels rolls
 Black construction paper
 Tape
 Small broom and dustpan

Transition/warm up/introduction:
To introduce earthworms and their habitat to the child. I will give them crayons
and paper and ask them to draw me a worm and where they might stay.

Adult-guided Procedures:
After the transition/warm up/introduction, the adult will…
1. Explain to the child that we are going to build an earth worm farm
2. bring out the coke bottle .
3. bring dirt, rocks , and sand out.
4. show child how to put dirt then sand in the bottle
5. after child has completed the dirt and sand , bring out worms
6.put worms in together.

Child-guided Procedures: (use as many or as few steps as needed)


1. First the child will watch me apply the dirt and sand as example.
2. Next the child will apply the dirt and sand until finished.
3. Then the child will place the worms into the dirt(if they want)
4. Then the child will place coffee grounds for the worms food
5. Finally the child will draw a design on the black paper.
6. place the black cover over the coke bottle.

Conversation to Support Learning/Talking with Children:


1. What did the worms do when we put them in the dirt?
2. How did the worms feel on your hands?
3. Why do you think we mixed dirt and sand?
4. Where can we find earth worms?
5. what did you think about the earth worms?

Observations and Assessment: (how you will know the child knows or can do
something, what you will see the child do or hear the child say) (Must relate to
the Standards you selected for outcomes! You must put the related ELS/OTHER
STANDARD CODE in parenthesis after each possibility.)

Accommodations for individuals:


Scaffolding down: I will assist the child in setting up the habitat, and place
the worms in.

Scaffolding up: Allow child to pick all the worms out and place them
alone.
