when the plane arrived on Princc Edward Island in canada, the snow was thick on the
ground as they'd had about 100cm in 24 hours. That amount of snow was unusual fbr the
island but I didn't know that so I wasn't worried. It didn't look much thicker than snrw
I'd seen in scotland. I was going to visit my friencl, chris, and he 'd warned me it would
be very cold ancl snowy. In fact I was feeling too warm as I hacl too many clothes on

Chris mct me in his car and we wefe quite near his house, which was only five
kilometres from the airport, when we got stuck in the snow. So we phonecl the road
rescue services and a man and a truck arrived. He said we were the fifth car he 'd pulled
out of the snow that evening. He started his engine and he 'd almost pulled us out ... only
to find that the truck had brought a whole pile of snow down from the siclesof the road
onto both vehicles and the truck was stuck too. He phoned to get an even larger truck to
come ancl rescue us all. Eventually it did!

chris tumed off the engine and we sat in the car to wait for the seconcltmck to pull us
out. I suggestedhc might keep the engine running so we could stay warm. He pointed
out that the petrol gauge was showing nearly empty ancl he was anxious that we still had
to get to his house.W'efinally arrived at his house af 1.3O in the morning - five hours
after leaving the airport.

Restaura.nt Manager
Laura Davy has been the manager at Quinto's restaurant since 2001. euinto,s is a popular
restaurant and often has as many as 500 customers in one evening. It is a big business to
run but Da\y says she can't imagine doing an¡hing else.

Restaurantwork was not what she intended to clo.She started studying music at university
but then left to work in a restaurant.'My family didn't agree with my choice but it was very
clear to me that that was what I wanted to do.'She did a bit of everything and learnt
quickly. She started training as a chef but soon realised she was better at festaufant
mallagement.

Daly now divides her time betweefl the restaur¿nt floor and the office. She sometimes
regtets spcnding so much time in the office and misses being with customers.,I have to
xrnive at the office very early. There are always a lot of kitchen supplies to order and bills to
pay before meeting staff If I have a really busy day in the office, I leave around 7, lust before
people arrive in the restaurant.'

Daly managesabout 140 staff and knows how important they are to the business.,I don,t
have happy customers withour good staff.'She sometimes employs the wrong people but
believes that making mistakes is the only way to learn.'I've succeeded in building up a good
team.'However, staff sometimes leave Quinto's to work in other restaurants or travel abroad.
Daly accepts that she cannot always keep staff.'If they've already made their decision,
there's no point saying an¡hing. But if they come back at a later date, I,m happy to re-
employ them.'

Tom Avery is the youngest Briton to have reacheclboth poles. He and his team recently
followed the routc taken by Robert Peary in his 1909 expedition to the North Pole.

tsoth men left from Cape Columbia in Canadabut Pcary's team was larger. Peary also had four
support groups and every l6O kilometres a group wonlcl leave fcroclbehind and tu¡n back.
This meant the tcam decreasedin sizc as hc went north. Avefy's team didn't have the extra
mcn, but they had fbocl clropped by plane at four locations.

Although Avery's team had the benefit of modern technology, Avery thinks this did not make
much diffcrcncc. 'Your speed dcpends on the dogs and how quickly you can get a sledgc
through thc icc. \íe also hacl to cleal with the same tlangers. At the end of winte¡ some icc is
only 7 centimetres thick and it can brcak casily under your weigl.tt. Peary was also more
experienced than us and had been on sevcral expeditions to the Arctic.'

Avery believes they owe their successto the 16 Inuit dogs that pulled the sledges.
workccl in tcams of 8. They kept us going. In tlte evenings,I would thank every one of them.'
'Travelling with dogs is the bcst fotm ofArctic transport. You cannot do the
iourney in that
time by any other method.'

Some historians say that Peary could not have reached the North Pole in 39 days. But Avery's
team actually beat this time, becoming the fastest to reach the North Pole on foot. Avery says,
'Wc told everyone it could be done so it was important not to fail. But it was hard, especially
towards the end when the ice was melting quickly.'
