SUBJECT : BUSINESS OPPORTUNITIES IN CLIMATE CHANGE

The undersigned attended 2018 Regional Business and Climate


Summit: Business Opportunities in Climate Change, conducted in Quest
Hotel, Clarkfield, Pampanga, on March 1, 2018. This was hosted by the
Climate Change Commission (CCC), in partnership with the UNDP Low
Emission Capacity Building Philippine Project (LECB PHL), the Philippine
Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Metro Angeles Chamber of
Commerce and Industry, Inc. (MACCII) and the Philippine Business for the
Environment (PBE).
The event was participated by several business and corporate groups
and various government agencies. CCC recognizes the pivotal role of the
business sector in reducing greenhouse gas emissions by incorporating
low emission development strategies in their business process. Basically,
the summit (1) aims to raise climate change consciousness of the business
and industry sector; (2) demonstrate new technologies and/or strategies;
(3) create opportunities for collaboration between companies who can work
together to address the growing demand for environmental goods and
services; (4) introduce government policies or market instruments for
industry planning on climate change impacts; (5) encourage private
industries to develop low carbon development initiatives; and (6) foster
participatory governance between the government and private industries
in implementing climate change adaptation and mitigation activities.
Highlights of the Meeting:
 Sec. Emmanuel De Guzman, Vice Chairperson of Climate Change
Commission (CCC) emphasized in his Keynote Address entitled
Convergence Towards a Green Economy, that if the Philippines
invests 0.5% of its GDP by 2020 in climate change adaptation, it can
avert losses losses of up to 4% of its GDP by 2100;
 Engr. Aimee Evangelista, Sr. Science Research Specialist of CCC
presented updates regarding Nationally Determined Contributions
(NDC) and the Adaptation Priorities for Consideration that includes:
a) scaling up ecosystem-based adaptation in climate vulnerable
landscapes in the Philippines; b) conduct of natural resources
accounting (NRA), vulnerability assessment (VA), and ecosystem
services valuation across ecosystems; c) capacity development on
climate science for data knowledge management; and d) use of
nickel-eating plant species and other pollutant absorbing plant
species in watershed-mined areas;
 Business group and developers, also presented their climate change
adaptation practices. One that captured the attention of the
audience was th of Ayala Land, Inc. and their Sustainability
Practices in Project Planning and Development presented by Ms.
Anna Maria Gonzales (Sustainability/Planning Manager of ALI) that
includes: a) technical due diligence protection of waterways increase
native species; b) transport assessment and planning to prioritize
pedestrians and public transport, c) tracking and setting targets in
carbon emissions, energy, water and waste; and d) spaces for local
enterprise in development including the training of locals for
employment in projects;
 Ms. Anna also highlighted that ALI is dedicating 450 hectares to
carbon forests that captures 68KtCO2e as measured by Center for
Conservation Innovation (CCI) using the REDD+ framework;
 Another corporate presenter was the VP for Corporate Affairs of
Nestle Phils., Engr. Jesus Reyes, wherein he emphasized the Nestle
Energy Management Roadmap, using renewable energies, efficient
processes and efficient use of equipment. Not to mention their
known Greening the Supply Chain program wherein Nestle shares
its best practices and assists its business partners in raising
environmental performance by incorporating environmental
protection into business practices;
 Engr. Reyes highlighted the use of coffee waste as fuel for boiler,
wherein 150,000 kg of spent coffee grounds per day are used
producing 20 ton per hour of steam energy, saving more than 4,000
million liters of oil, reduced SOx emission by nearly 300 tons and
prevention of 70,000 tons of waste;
 Representative from DTI-BOI presented the 2017 Investment Priority
Plan (IPP) and reiterated the qualified projects/developers who can
avail incentives provided by DTI;
 Bank of Philippine Islands (BPI) presented the BPI Sustainable
Energy Finance particularly inclined on investments related to
efficient energy generation and climate change adaptation.
Specifically, the financing options this program offered are the
following: Capital Expenditure Financing for green building
construction, Working Capital Financing for purchase of raw
materials for sustainability projects and Leasing of industrial
machineries;
 The Green Climate Fund was presented by USEC. Analiza Rebuelta-
Teh, who and how this can be accessed and avail by developers and
other stakeholders.
