Judge

The judge makes sure the proceedings are being followed


according to the law. They make sure the evidence is
relevant. Most importantly the judge decides the final
sentence.
They are referred to as ‘Your Hounour’ or ‘The Honourable
Justice (surname)’. The judge wears a black gown.

Judge’s Associate
The judge’s associate helps in the
administration of the court including
preparing documents, recording decisions
and issuing forms and warrants.

Defence Counsel
A solicitor or barrister (lawyer) employed by
the accused or defendant to defend the
charge. Depending on the state they may also
wear a wig and a gown.
Prosecutor
A solicitor of barrister (lawyer) who conducts
criminal proceedings on behalf of the
government to convince the jury that the
accused is guilty.

Accused
The person on trial for committing an
offence. They can also be known as the
defendant.

Witnesses
People who give evidence on behalf of the
prosecution or defence.
Orderly
Calls witnesses and helps to keep order in the
court.

Media Bench
This is where journalists can sit to listen and
then report on the proceedings.

Monitor
Ensures all the court evidence is recorded on
tape.
Public Gallery
Members of the public are allowed to watch
court proceedings.

Bailiff
The bailiff keeps watch over the accused or
deals with the jury. They will also follow up
with obtaining any fines due from the
accused.

Jury
The jury is usually made up of about 12
people randomly selected from the general
public. They listen to the trial and decide as a
group whether the person is guilty or not.
