Evaluation criteria

The course consists of six sections that describe the stages of the project.
Each stage contains one chapter of the simulation activity with a total of six
exercises to solve, which represent 70% of the final grade. At the end
of the course, you will find published the final exam. This will consist of a
series of exercises that cover the whole course and it represents 30% of
the final grade. To pass the course and receive a certificate you must
obtain a grade of at least 60%.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the start date of the course?

The course begins on June 1.

Which topics will the course cover?

The content of Introduction to Computer Numerical Control is organized into six

sections:

1. Introduction, interpretation of plans and orders: develops the basic way to

analyze the plans of a piece and the differences between a conventional machine
tool and a CNC.

2. Process analysis and machines with CNC: presents the various components of
the CNC machines, their powertrains and the associated coordinate systems.

3. Selection of the cutting tool: based on the ISO standard, the concepts associated
with the correct selection of the cutting tool and the associated factors are
explained.

4. Code generation: explains the structure of a CNC code, the basic functions and
their implementation in the code. The aim is for the student to be able to develop a
simple code.

5. Code implementation in the machine: all of the adjustments and work required
before starting production.

6. Quality control and measurement of pieces: an introduction to the concept of

quality and the importance of process control.

What will I learn on this course?

• Operate a machine controlled by Computer Numerical Control (CNC).

• Understand the steps to follow in a manufacturing project using a CNC machine.

• Program the movement instructions of a CNC machine.

How long is the duration?

This is a self-paced course and it will be opened until June 1, 2018.

When will sections be published?

All the sections are published from June 1, 2017.

How much study time per week will I require?

With just 2 hours of study per week you should be able to do the necessary
exercises to complete the course.

Will I be able to write a CNC code?

Yes you will. Our goal is that by the end of this course you will be able to take a
simple piece and convert the specifications of the plan into a series of commands
that enable the CNC to produce the piece.

Will certificates be given?

Students who reach the pass grade (at least 60% of the points available) and
choose the "Pursue a Verified Certificate" option will receive a pass certificate.

Where can I check the dynamics of the course?

You are invited to the discussion: you can publish questions about the course and
its dynamics whenever you have any doubts.

Which browser should I use?

We recommend using Internet Explorer 9 or Google Chrome.

Is there any course to explain how the platform works?

Yes there is. EdX has developed a course specifically designed for this. The course
link is: EdX101

Help
If you need technical help to use the edX platform, first click on the "Help"
tab (top left-hand corner of the browser screen). If you cannot find the
answer you are looking for, please post your question related to the edX
platform in the discussion topic Technical Issues.

If you need help with some content of the course, post your doubts in
the discussion forum so other learners can help you. We encourage you to help
each other as the professor and course staff won't be able to answer to all
the questions but the most voted or difficult ones. If you need an answer
from a staff member or, please write [STAFF] in the title of your post (e.g.
[STAFF] Exercise 1 -Well Construction).

Discussion Forum Guidelines

The discussion forum is the main means by which you communicate with the course
team and other students. We hope to help create a sense of community and serve
as a useful resource for your learning. The discussion forum will be moderated by
the professor and the course team on a daily basis.

Observe the honor code

We encourage collaboration and help, but please avoid posting questions and
blatant answers. Please follow these collaboration guidelines. The staff will be
proactive to delete posts and answers in the forum that cross the line, and accounts
can also be disabled and the progress of those found cheating can be deleted.

Given a problem, you can discuss the general way to approach it or give/receive
tips to help someone reach the correct answer. However, you should find detailed
solutions yourself.

You are not allowed to take someone else's solution and simply copy the answers to
your solution, or take someone else’s formula or code and run it yourself to obtain
the final answer.

It is not allowed to publish the answers of the task before the deadline.

Be friendly

We have students from all over the world and with different profiles. Some things
that may be very easy for you, can be more challenging for someone else. Our aim
is to build a proactive community.

Rate publications that you consider to be good positively

This applies to questions and answers. Click on the green positive sign so that good
posts can be found more easily.

Search before asking

The forum can become difficult to use if there are too many conversation
threads, and the best discussions occur when everybody participates in the
same conversation. Before asking, use the search function by clicking on the
magnifying glass on the left-hand side.

Notify staff

If you want a staff member to look at your post, write [Staff] at the beginning of
your title.

Be specific

Choose a descriptive title, and provide as much information as possible: Which part
of a problem or video? Why don’t you understand the question? What have you
tried to do?

Write clearly

We know that the language may be a second language for many of you but correct
grammar helps others to answer. Avoid CAPITAL LETTERS, abbreviations of words
and excessive punctuation!!!!

Use the discussions while working with the material

On many of the pages of the educational and task sequences, there is a link
below that says "Show Discussion". A click on this link displays all the
threads in the forum associated with this particular study material.
