Update SONAR

1.1. Update with SONAR.

Due to continuous development and optimization of the programs it might be
that newer versions have already been released at the time of your SOFiSTiK
CD/DVD installation.

The new versions of the programs are available on the FTP Server (ftp.sofis-
tik.de), which can be accessed by maintenance clients by means of a pass-
word. Here you are able to download the latest program packages (.zip for
Windows,*.tgz for Linux), which can then be unzipped in your SOFiSTiK di-
rectory. This procedure is automated by the program SONAR. SONAR is also
able to show you the latest changes made to the programs.

Hint: In the following paragraphs all the individual programs (AQUA,SOFi-

PLUS,SOFICADV..) are referred to as "modules".

Without special parameters, SONAR starts as a normal client program which

updates the local installation. With some parameters, however you can start
SONAR in the so−called mirror−mode for mirroring parts of our download-
server. This mode is offered for network admins which can deliver all clients
with certain SOFiSTiK versions from a central point.

1.1.1. SONAR − Normal Mode, Update of an Installation

SONAR is, assumed you start without special parameters, a so−called Wiz-
ard which provides you with a step−by−step procedure during the update.
The program window is divided in two parts. In the left side of the window you
will find the appropriate help on the current step and in the right side you can
change the settings.

Fig. 1

In the first window (see Fig. 1) you have to specify the path for your SOFiSTiK
installation (Structural Analysis Programs) and if needed also for your SOFi-
PLUS/SOFiCAD installation. If you have more than one SOFiSTiK directory,
choose one of them. In case of doubt leave the default setting. If for example
a SOFiPLUS installation was found, but you are not interested in an update,
then just disable this option.

Additionally you have the choice to download your license file directly from
our downloadserver. To do so you must click on the check box "Install license
file from Downloadserver".

Notice: The download of the license file will be realized with a secure connec-
tion (HTTPS). If you are using a proxy server, please make sure that the proxy

server is registered as an SSL proxy in step 2.

If you have finished with the path settings, please press the Next button.

Fig. 2

In step 2 (see Fig. 2) a lot of setting can be made for the downloading pro-
cedure.

Manual Update:
In step 3, this will list all your modules, with version number, and also
the newest versions on the server. You then have to decide which mod-
ules should be updated.

Version 12.0 −3
SONAR Update

Automatic Update:
This will automatically update all modules for which are a newer ver-
sions are available.

Choose between downloading from a Downloadserver or a local source in the

next box. If you choose a server you can decide between different protocols.
Check if you have a direct connection to the internet or if you must use a proxy
server to connect. If that’s the case you have to specify the proxy settings,
through clicking at the toolbox symbol right from the server selection box.

Download Directory:
This is the temporary directory to which SONAR will save all the pack-
ages (e.g. ase.zip) from the server, which are then immediately un-
zipped to the SOFiSTiK directory. If you have not selected Packages
remain in the download directory (default behaviour), then they
will be removed automatically after having been unzipped.

If you also want to download the manuals (for structural analysis in .pdf for-
mat) you can select from the following options:

Download and install manuals:

analog to the procedure of the module packages.

Only download:
If you have made your own comments into the sofistik manuals, you
probably don’t want that they will be lost through an update. For that,
you can select this option so that the manuals will only be downloaded
into the download directory (without transfer into the sofistik direc-
tory). After closing SONAR, you can import the comments into the new
manual (with the appropriate Adobe Plugin) and copy it to the SOFi-
STiK directory.

At the bottom of the window you have to enter the right password, because
you are not able to access the downloadserver without it.

Only for manual update:

If you get an error message at step 3, then you should refer to the section
"SONAR Troubleshooting − what should I do?". If no error is given you will
see a window (Fig. 3) which lists the existing to the newest versions. Mark all
modules which you want to update (as a default the newer versions are se-
lected already). For information on the changes made to the newer versions,
click the right mouse button on the modules name and choose the option "See
ChangeLog". After a short time you can then see the changes in an extra win-
dow.

Version 12.0 −5
SONAR Update

Show all available modules:

With this option you can force the program to show all modules which
are existing (for each section: Structural Analysis,SOFiPLUS,SOFi-
CAD). All these modules are markable for downloading&installation.
Please consider that you need permission from you license file in the
case of modules which are not free.

Show latest beta modules (in development)

With this option you can download builds which aren’t officially re-
leased. SONAR will mark these modules in red to signalize that the use
is at your risk.

At the last step a protocol is given on the download and update progress. If
you get an error message like in Fig. 4, then the program which you want to
update is still in use (or also a library file, *.dll). Close this application (here:
TEDDY) and press Retry on the message dialogue. If you are unable to close
it, press Ignore. When your protocol writes Update finished you can press
the Finish button. All your settings will be saved and reloaded at the next
time.

SONAR Troubleshooting − what should I do?

The most likely case is that you get an error message when you reach step 3
and/or you can’t see the table with its modules. This indicates that a connec-
tion to the downloadserver cannot be established. Please check the following
things.

−6 Version 12.0
Update SONAR

1) Does your internet connection work at all? If you use an access−

software (like AOL), first create a connection.

2) Open a command interface (on Windows: MS−DOS Command

Prompt) and type the following: "ping ftp.sofistik.de":
Normally you should receive a positive answer. If not, you are
likely in a network which outgoing connections goes over proxy
server. For each protocol you have to specify the appropriate
Proxy Server (HTTP,FTP,SSL) in SONAR. If you have doubts
about the setting, please ask your network admin.

3) Other connections (like www.sofistik.com within a web browser)

can be established, but SONAR not:
First try to download from an HTTP server (HTTP Server OSH),
which must be set in step 2. If SONAR still hangs you probably
have a Proxy server in your network which must be specified also
in step 2.

4) Other connections to FTP server can be established without prob-

lems, but not to the SOFiSTiK FTP server:
In general we allow passive and active FTP connections. Normally
the problem occurs at the firewall which may reject some connec-
tions. Please ask you network admin if passive connections are al-
lowed. If the problem still remains check if there is a Proxy server
in your network and/or download from an HTTP server (see sec-
tion 3)

5) Other potential error sources are documented at:

www.sofistik.com −> Support −> Internet Check list

As long as you don’t contact your network admin, please don’t ask our hotline,
because we don’t have any possibility to change your network settings.

If you check all points and the problem remains, feel free to contact our hot-
line.

Version 12.0 −7
SONAR Update

1.1.2. SONAR − Mirror Mode

This mode will allow you to mirror parts of the official SOFiSTiK download-
server. Therefore network admins have the advantage to store current of cer-
tain sofistik versions at a distinct point in the network to achieve a unique
client configuration. Another advantage is to prevent internet downloading
for each client computer.
The mirror mode can be entered with following parameters:

sonar −m<BITPATTERN> <LOCAL−MIRROR−PATH>

At Linux you can enforce a graphical front end with a capital "−M", which is
automatically shown at Windows. With an "−m" you get a command line ver-
sion at Linux, which can be useful if you download with a shell.
You can set following bit values. If you don’t set any Bit−Pattern, the complete
server will be mirrored.

1: Structural Analysis 99
2: Structural Analysis 21
4: Structural Analysis 23
16: SOFiPLUS 16.1
32: SOFiPLUS 16.2
64: SOFiPLUS 16.3
128: SOFiPLUS 16.4
256: SOFiPLUS 17.1
512: SOFiCAD 16.2
1024: SOFiCAD 16.3
2048: SOFiCAD 16.4
4096: SOFiCAD 16.5
8192: SOFiCAD 17.1

If you want to mirror SOFiCAD 16.4 and structural analysis, call

sonar −m2052 <Local−Mirror−PATH>

So, all users in your network are able to download from the local mirror path
with SONAR (classical mode), if they specify the local download source in step
2.

−8 Version 12.0
Update SONAR

Notice: In the section structural analysis you will receive Windows and Linux
automatically.

On Linux you have several parameters of the mirror mode:

sonar −M<BITCODE> <Local Mirror Path> => appears with a GUI like
on Windows

sonar −m<BITCODE> <Local Mirror Path> => appears only in

command mode

sonar −a<BITCODE> <Local Mirror Path> => will run in the auto−
matic mode (good for
CRON−jobs)

1.1.3. SONAR − Bulletin Mode

With the command

sonar −b<BITCODE> <PATH> −d<DAYS>

you can create a maintenance bulletin. It gives you the changes of the last
<DAYS> days of our modules. The output format is .htm, like the input log−
files.

<BITCODE> can have following values:

1: create SOFiSTiK Structural Analysis Maintenance

bulletins
2: create SOFiPLUS Maintenance bulletins
4: create SOFiCAD Maintenance bulletins
128: create column with German output
256: create column with English output

All arguments have their defaults

<PATH>: working directory

<DAYS>: 30 (Changes of last 30 days)
