FUNDAMENTACIÓN
La lingüística es el estudio del lenguaje humano. Este estudio es importante para el estudiante
de Inglés, ya que le permite comprender la estrecha relación de la lengua con diversas
disciplinas y cómo un idioma determinado se fundamenta en diversos patrones de lenguaje. El
conocimiento del sistema de sonidos del inglés, las palabras y sus formas, el significado de las
oraciones y su articulación, permiten no sólo entender la autonomía del idioma, sino además
su evolución en las sociedades modernas.

OBJETIVOS DEL CURSO

La Unidad Curricular “Lingüística I” está dirigida a:
 Revisar el conocimiento lingüístico actual del idioma Inglés.
 Analizar los patrones de formación de oraciones.
 Examinar los fundamentos morfológicos, sintácticos, semánticos y fonéticos del inglés.

SINOPSIS DE CONTENIDO
Linguistic knowledge: sounds and words. Morphology: introduction to morphemes, classes of
words, rules of word formation. Sentence patterns of language. Semantics. Phonetics.

CONTENT

UNIT I. Linguistic Knowledge.

What is Language. Sound System. Words: form and meaning. Sentences and
nonsentences. Competence and Performance. 9 hours

UNIT II. Morphology.

The words of language. Classes of words: lexical content words, function

words. Introduction to morphemes. Rules of word formation. Word coinage: 12 hours
meaning of compounds, acronyms, back formations, abbreviations.
UNIT III. Sentence Patterns of Language.

Sentence structure: syntactic categories, phrase structure. The Lexicon:

subcategorization, lexical differences. 9 hours

UNIT IV. Semantics.

Lexical semantics. Properties. Semantic relationships: homonyms and

polinomy, synonims and antonyms, hyponims, metonyms. Proper names. 9 hours

UNIT V. Phonetics.

Sound segments. Spelling and speech: phonetic alphabet. Articulatory

phonetics. Places and manners of articulation. Consonants and vowels. 9 hours
Symbols.
