Universal Design for Learning (UDL):
UDL is embedded in this lesson in various ways.
I. Multiple means of representation: alternatives for visual and auditory information,
clarification of vocabulary and symbols, promoting understanding across languages
II. Multiple Means of action and expression: multiple media for communication, multiple tools
for construction and composition, build fluencies with graduated levels of support for
practice and performance
III. Multiple means of engagement: optimize choice and autonomy, relevance, value and
authenticity

Lesson idea implementation:
Teacher will introduce lesson and mentor text.
“George Washington was our very first president. It seems like his face is everywhere. It’s on every
quarter. It’s on every dollar. Americans have honored him because he was the first president and helped
start our country. That is why it is important to know about him. This book about President George
Washington was written by Garnet Jackson.”
Teacher and students will participate in whole class read aloud. Teacher will introduce a timeline format
to students. “A good way to remember what happens is to draw a line. This line shows years. It goes from
left to right, just like we read. As I read, I will add the year that Washington was born, the year he died,

and some important years in between.” Students and teacher will use BBPTs to organize information
gathered from reading (George Washington’s life through a timeline). Next, students will choose a tool
(using Kidspiration) to map/organize information about who George Washington was. Students will
include vocabulary and other notable characteristics in the visual.

Reflective Practice: This lesson is a good way to introduce important concepts and comprehension
strategies to young students. Visual tools and graphic organizers are great ways to help students
understand and remember content. These tools can be used with this lesson and many others. Graphics
and fluency with technology will certainly improve as students practice using them.
