Performance: Students will be able to clearly identify the author’s purpose of a work.
Conditions: In pairs
Whole Objective: Clearly identify the author’s purpose in a variety of works through working with a partner and
supplying proof as to why that is the author’s purpose.
Prior Knowledge:
Knowing the three types of author’s purpose: to inform, entertain and persuade the reader and key questions to ask
when trying to classify.
“We are going to keep covering the topic of author’s purpose. Can someone
tell me what the three possible purposes an author is writing can be for?”
*Call on three different students for answers and write them on the board in

“Great, okay what do we need to be looking for to help us identify what the
author’s purpose is when reading a text?” *Call on students to receive
answers for all three.*
“Working in partners you are going to have to collaborate together to create
two examples of each author’s purpose that we will then share with the rest

“Now, you all are going to write your examples with your partners for each
of the types of author’s purpose we have been learning about. Once you and
your partner have completed this I want you each to pick your favorite
