Chemistry. Two deviant cases, one male and one female, served as participants of this study. Five
themes emerged from the study: (a) being challenged leads to more intense studying, (b) more
time and more focus is required to learn a subject effectively; (c) more intense studying as
examinations near and (d) self-determination and (e) Study techniques. This study unveiled that
students are capable of self-learning and self-discovery of ways on how to pass a course or
subject of study, and these self-taught strategies vary from one student-learner to the next. The
experience of having to study Chemistry for two semesters meant having to pass them at all costs
for taking up STEM strand in senior high school. Students need to develop positive attitudes
towards studying by developing study habits or by adopting those techniques adopted by peers
who are good in those subjects. Teachers must find ways to optimize learning by matching their
teaching styles with student learning styles. Further research is needed to explore further this
aspect of student learning.
