ART5930C: Mapping & Place

3/15/2018
Lesson 4

I chose a map that shows both Albany, Ga. and Charleston, SC. because my boyfriend
and I took a route every weekend while we lived in different states. I printed the map out in black
and white to represent how dreadful that time was. The long distance was very hard to deal with
and the driving back and forth was exhausting. The background is the original Google map. I
took an image on the car that I had at the time and placed the map over it. I then skewed the map
using scale and rotation to fit the marked route within the car. After what we’ve learned in
pervious lessons about scale and accuracy in map I felt like this was appropriate. It also works
well because the accurate distance didn’t matter after a while, any distance would have felt like
“forever.” I worked the map so that Albany would be at one end of the car and Charleston the
other end of the car. I used black to highlight the car because and kept the background dark and
muted much like the emotions that we felt at the time.
