1. Give an intro to the new unit titled ‘Best Buddies’ from literature book
a. Have students go to page 404 and look at the title page of our new unit. Ask them
what they think it might be about
b. Discuss what we think it means to depend on someone and take student ideas
c. Talk about how depend means to rely or count on another person
d. Give examples and take student examples
2. Have students create a comic strip/story that depicts to animal friends who depend on or
help one another
a. Provide example
b. Early finishers to complete ABC order spelling word practice
3. Students share their comic with a partner
4. Have students turn to page 408 in their books to teach the word ‘motive’
a. Talk about how motive means the reason why we do/don’t do something. How
two people who do the same thing can have different motives
b. Have students complete a character motives sheet on their comic strip character
5. Students come to carpet and read the big book story ‘The Hen, The Rooster, and The
Bean’ and discuss as we read
a. Have students think-pair-share and discuss the motives of the different characters
6. Students go back and pick one character and create a character map about the character’s
motive
