ME3670 Spring 2018

Homework No. 7
Due April 23rd, 2018

Complete the following Shigley book problems:

 Problem 8-4

o The given diameter of a power screw is the outer or major diameter.

o Use dm = d – p/2

 Problem 8-7

o Only do parts (a) and (b).

o Use an alpha value of 30 degrees.

o Use dm = dp = d – 0.649519*p ; dm is mean diameter, p is pitch.

o Is it self-locking? State how you found this.

o Determine the efficiency ignoring collar friction.

 Problem – 3 [DON’T DO Problem 8-14]

o A 2-in steel plate and a 1-in cast-iron plate are compressed with one bolt and nut. The bolt is
1/2 in-13 UNC SAE Grade 5 Bolt. The unthreaded portion of the bolt, ld, is 2.25 inches long. The
threaded portion of the bolt, lt, is 0.75 inches long. Note that steel and cast iron have the same
modulus.

a) Find the bolt stiffness. [Use Eq: 8-17]

b) For a removable joint, what are your recommendations for torque and preload (Fi)?

c) What is the member stiffness, km. Use equation 8-22 like we used in class, or Equation 8-
23. Eq. 8.22 is easier to apply in this case.

d) If there is an external load, what percentage of it would the bolt take (Pb)?

e) What is the largest external load that the bolt can take and still have load sharing?

f) An external load oscillates between a tensile value of one-half of the preload (Fi/2) and 0.
What are the actual alternate and mean forces and stresses in the bolt? Eq. 8-35 and 8-
36 are used to calculate theoretical alternate and mean stresses in the bolt. [Use Kf
from table 8-16 while calculating stresses. Assume rolled threads]
