Data management and analysis

In order to describe our screener characteristics, we decided to compute the frequencies for the

demographic variables, circumcision for men, as well as test status for women. In order to make

our research more reliable, credible and efficient we also decided to calculate the prevalence of

HIV as well as the HSV-2. We carried out bivariate analyses in order to assess the association

between the status of HIV and the independent variables. Along the data analysis, we decided to

treat age as a continuous variable. In addition, we decided to categorize the number of lifetime

partners and the number of vaginal sexual partners in the past 4 months due to the highly skewed

distribution.

All the participants who were reported to be sexually active in the past 4 months in the screening

computer-assisted personal interview. However, some of the participants indicated that they had

no sexual partners or else they decided to refuse to provide a response in the screening.

Furthermore, in questionnaires, sexual intercourse was defined as vaginal sex. Gender-specific

variables like pregnancy status as well as hormonal contraceptive use for women, use of

condoms for males and females the status of circumcision for men, were also included in the data

analysis.

Furthermore, multivariate logistic regression model was run separately for both men and women

in order to allow for the different variables in the finalizing model which included variables that

had a p-value <0.25 in the bivariate analyses. In addition, adjusted odds ratios and 95%

confidence intervals were also incorporated in the calculations.
