Please provide a brief essay (500 words) describing your interest in human rights
work.
As a student pursuing a 5-year B.A.L.L.B(Hons.) from the National Law University and Judicial
Academy, Assam, I am very keen on being a part of the Human Rights Law Network as it will
help me to develop real life skills and would help me to get practical knowledge of laws relating
to human rights. The Constitution lays down as fundamental in the governance of India, the
establishment of a social order for the promotion of the welfare of the people where inequalities
are minimised, adequate means of livelihood secured, control of resources distributed to
subserve the common good, concentration of wealth eliminated, the right to work and education
provided for and so too public assistance in case of old age, sickness, disablement and want. It
can undoubtedly be said that the legal system in India is oriented entirely towards the needs of
the rich and is uncaring towards the poor. Also, it often happens that the poor having no other
option but to go to court. Then it becomes the duty of lawyers and social activists to defend
them. As a law student I always want to legally help the aggrieved people.
I have always been interested in work related to human rights laws as it is a challenging and
interesting task to provide social justice to people in a country like India. I believe that the large
scale struggles against violations of human rights have to be paid by social and political
movements in which the legal system can play a significant role. My interest in working for
human rights commenced from my personal experience when I many a times saw children,
disabled and old age people working in shops and standing whole day on roads to sell articles.
The age at which those children should be pursuing their studies and those disabled, old age
people must be relaxing having no other option left have to work. I believe that human rights
laws would help me in serving the needy people.
According to me, all human beings should be treated with respect whether the person belongs to
elite class or not. I want to acknowledge that till now I have never been involved in any
organization that works for human rights but I am a volunteer at Centre for Child Rights in my
college. Through this internship I look forward to know more about human rights laws and the
way they are applied in real life to help the suffering people. I would conclude by saying that
Human rights work is not just a kind of formality for me rather my inner values that tend me to
work for the needy and aggrieved people. I want that everyone should live a safe, free and
protected life.
Being a law student, it would be a great opportunity for me to work at Human Rights Law
Network. I hope that on consideration on my resume you will give me a chance to make a
contribution in your organization.
Thanking you
Yours faithfully
