Classroom Procedures

General Procedures

A. Beginning of period- As class begins students will be inside the classroom and headed

toward their seats if not there already. Students phones and other electronic devices that

will not be utilized for the lesson will be put away either in their pockets or backpacks.

Phones and electronic devices will remain out of sight for the duration of the period

unless otherwise instructed.

a. Attendance check- I will take attendance based on who is present in the class.

b. Previously absent students- Students who were previously absent will refer to

the weekly calendar that will be located on the bulletin board. Handouts and

instructions for the previous day’s assignments will be placed underneath the

bulletin board in the Previous Day Cubby.

c. Tardy students- Students who are tardy will enter the class quickly and quietly

without creating a distraction to their peers. Students will present their tardy slip

to the instructor if he/she is not actively engaging with students. If the instructor is

engaging with others, the student will present their tardy slip when the instructor

is finished.

B. Out-of-room policies- Students will represent the school in a positive manor and respect

the people and locations that they encounter on their journey.

C. Materials and equipment- Students will be expected to come to class equipped with a

tool to write with a long with one notebook that will be used solely for this class.

Students are able to utilize personal laptops for note taking however this is a privilege

and it can be revoked if abused.


a. What to bring to class- Students will bring a tool to write with a long with their

notebook that is dedicated to this class only. The instructor will notify students a

day in advance if they are to bring any other materials with them to class.

b. Pencil sharpener- Students will be expected to have their materials in order prior

to the beginning of class. Students may use the pencil sharpener only if the

instructor is not actively engaged with them. Students are to sharpen their pencils

on downtime or their own time.

c. Other room equipment- Students must ask permission before engaging with any

other piece of classroom equipment. This includes but is not limited to: printers,

laptops, charging stations, projectors, speakers etc.

d. Student contact with instructor’s desk, storage, other materials- Students are

to ask permission before removing materials from the instructor’s desk.

D. Ending the period- Students will be allowed the final two minutes of class to pack up

their items and prepare for exit. Students will work until two minutes remain and will not

pack up during lecture or worktime.

Seat-Work and Instruction Procedures

A. Student attention- Students will give their full attention to those who are speaking to the

class whether that be the teacher, peers or other guest speakers. Students will remain

quiet and attentive. When in groups students will provide the same attention to the person

who is speaking as they would a speaker in front of the entire class.

B. Student participation- Students will share ideas and questions with the class as a whole.

Students are expected to respond when called upon or when they deem necessary.

Students must raise hand before they speak to the class. If students is uncomfortable with
speaking to the class they must arrange an alternative with the teacher at the beginning of

the semester.

C. Seat-work procedures- Student will actively work on their assignment and remain in

their seat unless otherwise instructed by the teacher.

a. Talk among students- Students are allowed to talk to their peers during group

work. Students must not talk during direct instruction. Students are free to talk

with others as long as each student completed their work.

b. Obtaining help- If the teacher is monitoring the room the student can raise their

hand for assistance. Students may approach the teacher’s desk for assistance

during worktime.

c. Out of seat- Students must remain in their seat unless they are obtaining needed

materials for the lesson. Students must ask permission before leaving their seat

unless otherwise instructed by the teacher.

d. When seat work has been completed- When seat work has been completed

students will have the time to themselves. Students could either talk to others who

have also completed their work, listen to music quietly, use their electronic

devices, work on other homework for different classes. Students must keep the

noise level down while doing so in respect to the others who are still working.

Student Group Work

A. Use of materials and supplies- Students are free to share materials amongst their group.

It is required that students come prepared with necessary materials. If students don’t have

access to materials, they can ask their peers or the teacher.


B. Assignment of students to groups- Students are free to choose their groups however

there will be instances where groups are pre assigned in order to promote diverse

perspectives within the classroom.

C. Student participation and behavior- Students will equally distribute group work in

order to ensure equal participation. Students will be graded according to their individual

input and not receive a group grade. Students will communicate respectfully and provide

appropriate praise and criticism.

Miscellaneous

A. Signals- The instructor will countdown from five in order to gain student attention. As

the countdown begins students are to stop what they are doing and pay attention to the

instructor.

B. Behavior during movies/video clips- Students will engage with the video as they will

fill out a graphic organizer provided by the teacher. Students will not talk or use

electronic devices during movies or video clips.

C. Fire and disaster drills- Students are to abide by the drills. During drills students will

stop what they are doing and follow the teacher’s instructions. Students will not talk and

act in an organized fashion.

D. Bathroom policy- Students will be treated as adults and are free to go to the bathroom

without permission as long as the bathroom pass is present. No more than 1 student will

be out at the bathroom at one time. Students must wait for the pass to return before

leaving. Students must leave quietly and quickly. This is a privilege and if abused will be

revoked.
