The last step for the base colour was dark shading with Tamiya XF-1 Black, heavily diluted in alcohol. Before the decals were added, I applied a base of gloss varnish. After the decals were placed, I used Micro
Set and Sol and once dry, I finished with light satin varnish layer.
Weathering
Next, the model was made dusty,
with fading and chipping
The dust process starts by airbrushing Humbrol H84 Matt Mid Stone heavily diluted with Thinner. I left the model to dry for approximately 15 minutes, removing the previous dust coat partially with a thin
paintbrush.
I painted the tools with acrylic paints and a brush in good condition including chipping, distinguishing The sweep of the turret on its ring is an

To give variety and chromatic richness, I added pigments by brush and fixed
them with artistic oils diluted in Humbrol Thinner.
Figure
The figure is Verlinden Item No. 758, “German Cold/Wet Dress”
- a classic from this manufacturer that I acquired a long time
ago. It finally seemed to be the perfect chance to paint it, and to
incorporate it into my collection.

Groundwork
I recommend that a model should always be placed on at least a simple base to lend
context to the vehicle. In this case I used Miniart’s Kit No. 36040, “Street Section w/
Tram Lines” as the base.
I always like the surface and the subject to be at an angle on the base to provide
more visual interest.
The power poles in the Miniart kit were too tall for my purposes, as I wanted to
show them partially demolished.
The ground was painted following similar processes that I used for the Panzer
II, beginning with a grey base applied by airbrush, followed by washes, pigments to
imitate mud and land, etc.
The water in the stream was created by gloss varnish dyed with acrylic Burnt
Umber 70.941, to help match the darker colours of the rest of the base.
I also added some small pebbles made for railway modellers, painted with ochre
tones to integrate with the groundwork.
The signs were created on my computer. They were print on thin cardboard, and
then varnished before weathering to integrate them into the scene.

TIGER
BY THOMAS ANDERSON
ISBN 978 1 78096 201 6
OSPREY PUBLISHING
‘Oh no, not another book on the Tiger’ I hear you cry. That was my first
thought when I saw this book, but please read on. I hope that you will be as
pleasantly surprised as I was.
Thomas Anderson is an authority on German Armoured Fighting Vehicles
and can sometimes be seen on online forums and magazine articles. For
this book he has used his own archive materiel, as well as teaming up with
Karlheinz Munch, Henry Hoppe and the late Tom Jentz. The result is a book
that brings us many new and unpublished photographs, as well as the authors
examination of the Tiger’s development, deployment, mechanical operation
as well as a study of it’s armour, armament and ammunition. I believe that
the author’s conclusions as to the widely held view that the Tiger was ‘over-
engineered, difficult to manufacture and unreliable in service’ will raise your
eyebrows as much as mine.
Content
Comprising of 256 pages, this hardbound book contains nine chapters that
look at the Tiger’s Development, Organisation, Mobility, Firepower, Armour,
Combat, Maintenance, Performance Under Fire and the author’s conclusions
wrap it up. We have everything here to cover the Tiger from its evolution
from competing Porsche & Henschel test vehicles up to the Jagdtiger. The
author looks at the organisation of a typical Tiger company, along with the
supporting vehicles, to cover all theatres of deployment. We have a section on
rail transport that provides reports of just how difficult the Tiger was to move
around.
I must admit that I skipped a few chapters and went straight to content on
combat in North Africa, a particular interest of mine. I cannot rate this section
highly enough as the author provides a breakdown of the early actions and
experiences of the Tiger. It includes excerpts from the Tiger Fibel (authors
own collection) showing the Tigers crews where to aim for when up against
Shermans and Lees. Interestingly, there is also a combat report on how the
Tiger crews viewed the 3.7cm gun of the M3 Stuart, which was ‘apparently
very accurate. Fire was especially heavily directed at the driver’s visor,
commander’s cupola and the gap between the hull and turret’.
We then move on to an analysis of combat in the East, which also provides
an excerpt from the Tiger Fibel on where to aim for on a KV1 and T34. We get
detailed combat reports of the Tiger in service, both Tiger 1 and King Tiger, as
well as reports from Soviet sources on the effectiveness of this vehicle.
Chapter 7 is devoted to the maintenance and recovery headaches that went
with keeping a Tiger in action. Everything from replacing a broken torsion
bar (requiring half of the road wheels to be removed) to recovery under fire is
touched up with comment and experience of the recovery crews recorded. A
few pages on the BergePanther round off this section.
An examination of the Tiger under fire rounds off the examination of the
vehicle. Here, we find out that it wasn’t only the Tiger crews receiving
instruction on where to hit their enemy but the Russians also provided guides
for both tank and anti-tank crews.
Perhaps the most interesting section though is the author’s conclusions. To
start with, we have an analysis of combat losses from sPzAbt 503 covering 78
days combat around the Kursk salient. With a daily average of 10 operational
Tigers, 501 soviet vehicles were destroyed for the loss of 24 Tigers. You will
have to buy the book for the rest of it as I cannot ruin your curiosity here!
Conclusion
I have a lot of reference on the Tiger, the bulk of which are limited to its
technical abilities. This book gives the reader a comprehensive overall snapshot
of this revolutionary machine. The after-action reports, combat deployment
analysis and previously unpublished photographs make this a worthwhile
addition to any Tiger library. For me personally I found the sections on combat
in North Africa and maintenance/recovery worth the asking price alone. As a
result, the book comes highly recommended from me.
Highly Recommended.

The weapons and equipment included are
generic ones found in all recent Dragon figure
sets so items such as the MG42, Gewehr 43
and MP44 can be put in the spares box as these
wouldn’t have been around for the time period
depicted.
In comparison to the packed box of German
troops the set of Japanese infantry is much
leaner and the figures an their equipment
is contained on a single sprue only. The
comments about moulding and detail above
can also be applied to this set, even down to
the die lines. Weapons are confined to just two
bolt-action rifles with bayonets fitted, a Model
99 7.7mm machine gun and a small pistol
which I believe is a late war Type 94.
The officers sword is a bit on the chunky side
(which is of course a limitation of the injection
moulding process) and could do with thinning
down. For some extra detail you could add
some fine thread as the swords and scabbards
were often fitted with cords and tassels.
Apart from the nitpicks with the moulding
these figures are on the whole nicely done and
although they depict specific places and time
periods they can be used in other areas too.

Krisztian Bodi’s “The Bodi” line has just expanded with two new 1:48 scale
figures to add to their range of lovely 1:35 scale products already on offer.
These two figures represent an SS Panzer Crew member, and a US Tanker.
Both figures are standing in a relaxed pose, and could be used either in
the hatch of a model, separately as a part of a vignette or diorama, or as a
standalone figure.
Both figures are wearing winter uniforms.
Sculpting is beautifully done, with excellent facial features and convincing
