Concentrated Aqueous Emulsion (EW)

A Concentrated Aqueous Emulsion (EW) is defined as a dispersion of a water insoluble organic liquid into a
continuous water phase.

The formulation is not a thermodynamically driven process but rather mechanically driven, requiring high-shear
processing to reduce particle size and attain a stable formulation. Concentrated aqueous emulsions are one
formulation type that can be considered as a safe and environmentally friendly alternative to emulsifiable
concentrates (EC), and offer the benefit of replacing much of the organic solvents with water. They are
physically stabilised by choice and concentration of surfactants at the solvent/water interface. The emulsion
has already been established in the end product and is only diluted in the spray mixture.

Benefits Limitations
Low solvent Active ingredient solubility in solvent
Low phytotoxicity Stability upon dilution
No flashpoint concern Unsuitable for hydrolytically unstable actives
Easy to handle Achieving long term stability
Lower environmental impact
Low in cost
Long term stability

For EW formulations Croda’s polymeric surfactants are recommended to ensure maximum emulsion stability.
Two different polymeric surfactant types are required to formulate an EW:

Low HLB component. Non-ionic random-copolymers such as Atlox 4914 are recommended. This product has
ease of handling as it is a liquid products.
High HLB component. EO/PO block copolymers are recommended. Often large EO/PO block-copolymers are
paste or solid products such as Atlas™ G-5000. A liquid variant, Atlas G-5002L, has been introduced.

Procedure
Phase 1 (Continuous water phase): Mix the freeze/thaw additive and viscosity modifier (Kelzan) in order to
hydrate the gum. Then add the water, bactericide and anti-foam. Stir until homogenous.
Phase 2 (Oil dispersed phase): Combine the surfactants and oil and heat to required temperature.
Add oil phase to water phase and apply high shear mixing at 10000 rpm for 1 minute
