1.1.1 Latin
The Latin alphabet, introduced about 700 AD by the Etruscans and derived from the Greek, comprises 26 basic letters with 21 consonants and 5 vowels. During all of
antiquity and well into the Middle Ages, only upper case letters (majuscles) were used. We can still see them in ancient inscriptions on churches, antique places of
interest etc. The Roman Capitalis Monumentalis represents the starting point for all European typefaces. The lower case characters (minuscles) were developed from
the upper case, but not until about 1000 years later during the time of the Carolingians. Further developments of the Latin script result from changes of it’s phonology
and from the Romance languages derived from it. Along with the introduction of new, additional letters, the development of writing systems requires further
improvements regarding readability, e.g. introduction of the word space, rules for punctuation and paragraphs etc. Also, the letter forms have been simplified again
and again over time. The evolution of letter forms is continuing all the time and never ends. Think about the invention of printing or typesetting. Calligraphy and
typography prove that writing systems are dynamic and under constant development.

1.3.1 Sample Text This is the new Nimbus Global Font family with four sans, two serif and one monospaced typeface styles in the following multi-lingual codepages: Standard Latin
West, Latin Extended (East), including Turkish and the Baltic Rim, Cyrillic (Russian, Belarusian, Bulgarian), Greek, Arabic + Farsi (Persian), Hebrew, Chinese,
Japanese, Korean, Thai, Vietnamese, Armenian, Georgian and many additional symbols and signs.
All Nimbus Global fonts are available as OpenType Pro fonts including the OTF Language Features necessary for the Arabic and Devanagari scripts.

2.1.1 Cyrillic
The Cyrillic and Latin scripts are very similar. This is because both are derived from Greek. In 863 AD, two monks, the brothers Konstantinos and Methodios, were
ordered by the emperor Michael to translate several ecclesiastical books from Greek to Slavic. For this purpose they first developed a new script better fitted to the
Slavic languages and tones. The first version of the new script contained 43 letters, 22 of which were taken directly from the Greek alphabet. Konstantinos’ monastic
name was Cyrillos, and the new script was named after him: Cyrilliza. The Russian Tsar Peter the Great (1672-1725) had the Cyrillic script simplified and redesigned
around 1700 to bring it closer to the design of the Latin script. In 1927, four letters were removed additionally to bring the number of basic letters down to 32 with 26
consonants and 6 vowels, both in upper and lower case.

3.1.1 GREEk and coptic

The Latin script was derived from the Greek, and thus, Greek and Latin are very similar. Greek can be traced back and is documented over a period of about 4000
years. There are two Greek scripts in use: monotonic and polytonic (ancient Greek or classic Byzantine). Coptic was derived from Greek as well. The Greek alphabet
comprises 24 basic letters in upper and lower case with 18 consonants and 6 vowels.

5.1.1 GEORGIAN
The Georgian script was introduced about 500 AD. It is derived from both the Greek and Persian scripts and is used caseless, i.e. with no differentiation between
upper and lower case. Several attempts to introduce upper and lower case like in Greek and Latin failed. The Georgian alphabet comprises 33 basic letters with
28 consonants and 5 vowels.

1.1.1 hebrew
Hebrew is the official script of modern Israel. The ancient version of the Hebrew script, derived directly from the Phoenician script, was developed as early as the
9th century BC; its usage ceased when the Jews were displaced in the 6th century. Today’s version of the Hebrew script stems from Aramaic, which itself was
developed from the Phoenician. Aramaic was for well over a thousand years the dominant language in the Middle East stretching from Egypt all over through Asia
Minor to India. It was Arabic that repressed and eventually replaced Aramaic in the 7th century. Hebrew and Aramaic belong to the family of Semitic scripts. They
comprise It 22 consonants and diacritics for vocalization. Hebrew, like Arabic, is written from right to left.

The Arabic script was introduced in the 7th century AD und stems directly from the Aramaic script, which itself was derived from the Phoenician. In addition to its 29
basic letters, Arabic contains diacritics placed above or below the letters to indicate for different pronunciations. Arabic, like Hebrew, is written from right to left, and
many of its letters interconnect. The letter forms change depending on their position in a word (isolated, initial, medial, final). Short vowels are not written in Arabic.

3.1.1 Devanagari
India is not called a subcontinent without reason. It is a country with many different people (about 1.1 billion), states, languages and scripts. Since 1965, Hindi is the
official language. It is written in Devanagari by the Hindis and in Urdu by the Moslems (Arabic script with special characters). Devanagari is, alongside Latin, the most
important and dominant script in India. It’s typical characteristic is the top line, on which all characters seem to hang on. Bengali, Gurmukhi and Tibetan, three other
Indic scripts, are similar to Devanagari. All Indic scripts are syllabic, which means that a consonant, e.g. ‘r’, is read as ‘ra’. Since many syllables end on ‘a’, the vowel
is inherent and thus not written. If the syllable does not end on ‘a’, the vowel is written. To repress the inherent vowel, a special symbol called ‘Halant’ is used. The
rules for handling Indic scripts are extremely complex but fully integrated into our Nimbus Global Fonts. Devanagari comprises 54 basic letters with 37 consonants
and 17 vowels.

1.1.1 HANGUL Syllables

Korea, like Japan, has adopted many institutions as well as cultural heritage from China, including the script. But as early as the 6th century AD, the Chinese ideograms
were modified to accommodate the specifics of the Korean language. The Koreans encountered the same problems as the Japanese: Chinese ideograms are not per-
fectly fitting to the Korean language. The most outstanding script development in Korean was the introduction of the Hangul script by King Sejong in 1446. It is a
syllabic script originally containing 28 letters with a systematic visual structure directly related to the phonetic pronunciation of the Korean language. Hangul is com-
pletely different from Chinese. The modern version of Hangul comprises 24 syllables with three individual parts: the initial consonant Ch’osong), the vowel
(chungsong) und the final consonant (chongsong).

2.1.1 HIRAGANA, KATAKANA, KANJI

Japan came into contact with China during the Han dynasty (206 BC – 220 AD), and adopted the Chinese script to write Japanese in the 5th / 6th century AD.
However, the two languages differ fundamentally, and in order to accommodate the specific needs of the Japanese language, the Kana syllables were introduced
in the 11th century. Japanese is written both horizontally and vertically.

Hiragana, one of the two modern Japanese scripts with 50 syllables, was originally introduced in the 9th/10th century by woman for woman because at that time,
writing of Kanjis was for men only

Katagana, again 50 syllables, is primarily used for foreign words where there is no Kanji available. Today, Japanese texts are set in 50-60% Kanas with only 40-50%
Kanjis. The Japanese standard character set JIS 1+2 contains about 7500 Kanjis.

3.1.1 CJK Unified Ideographs (simplified Chinese, traditional Chinese , Cantonese)

Unlike all other existing scripts, Chinese does not stem from the Semitic script. The Chinese ideograms were developed completely independently. The form and
structure of Chinese is are not at all comparable with their counterparts in alphabetic or syllabic scripts. Chinese is a language with clearly distinctive syllables, each
of which carries a meaning – a morpheme. Chinese is not structured on grammatical flexion, i.e. there is only one ideogram for write, writes, written, wrote etc., for
example. Since every morpheme is a new ideogram, a huge number of ideograms are required, 50,000 and more. It is not exactly right to say that the ideograms are
pictures. There are many terms and ideas which can hardly be described in a picture, like, for example, happiness, peace, friendship etc. However, you can draw a
picture and add a note or an attribute indicating that the picture is meant symbolically. The combined ideogram then has two or more parts which are arranged next to
each other horizontally or vertically. All parts always fit into a given box.
A modern Chinese dictionary lists 186 such parts called radicals or stroke groups. It is not known when exactly the Chinese script was introduced. There is documenta-
tion dating back to 1800 BC, but the script was already highly developed by then. In 1400 BC some 3000 ideograms already existed, and these have not been changed
much ever since. During the Chin dynasty from 221-206 BC, the final form of the script was established. Since not all ideograms can be drawn, the phonographic prin-
ciple was added, similar to that in the Sumerian cuneiform writing system. Mao Tse-tung ordered the ideograms to be simplified, i.e. the number of strokes was re-
duced. Today, both traditional and simplified Chinese are used in combination. The disadvantage of the Chinese script is obvious: there are so many ideograms to be
learned just to be able to read and write. But the advantage is: 1.3 billion Chinese people can read and write Mandarin-Chinese, although there are many different
languages and dialects, with Mandarin and Cantonese the best known.

1.1.1 Phonetic Symbols

This block includes the IPA Extensions, Spacing Modifier Letters as well as Superscripts and Subscripts briefly introduced below.

IPA Extensions
This set of IPA mainly contains the symbols for the international phonetic alphabet. IPA was introduced in 1886 and has been the standard for writing the specific
language sounds ever since. This block covers the current revision from 1989.

Spacing Modifier Letters

This set contains a group of small symbols used for indication modifications of the preceding, sometimes following character. Spacing Modifier Letters are always
set separately, never above or below a character (like accents).

Superscripts und Subscripts

This set of super- and subscripts can be used with phonetic or uralic symbols. Moreover, they are used to indicate tone in transliteration.

2.1.1 PUNCTUATION
This block briefly introduces General Punctuation, Small Form Variants as well as CJK Symbols and Punctuation.

General Punctuation
Punctuations are generally not coded script or language dependent but carry a unique Unicode for each punctuation symbol. However, as always, there are exceptions
to the rule with some punctuation symbols which are indeed language dependent, e.g. the Armenian hyphen (U+058A) or the Arabic comma (U+060C).

The function of such punctuations is unique or they have different directionality, or are distinct in form or usage from their generic counterparts.

Small Form Variants

The CNS 11643 standard (Taiwan) includes a number of small variants which are still used as full-width symbols.

CJK Symbols und Punctuation

This block includes punctuations and symbols for languages written with Chinese Han ideographs.

3.1.1 ALPHANUMERIC SYMBOLS

This group contains letterlike symbols, enclosed alphanumerics, enclosed CJK letters and months as well as CJK compatibility symbols.

Letterlike symbols are symbols derived from ordinary letters of an alphabetic script. This block includes symbols based on Latin, Greek, and Hebrew letters. Stylistic
variations of single letters are used for semantics in mathematical notation.

The enclosed alphanumeric symbols in this block consist of single Latin letters, digits, or numbers—most enclosed by a circle. The block also contains letters, digits,

or numbers enclosed in parentheses, and a series of numbers followed by a full stop. All of these symbols are intended for use as numbered (or lettered) bullets in
ordered lists, and most are encoded for compatibility with major East Asian character sets.

The enclosed CJK letters and months contain large sets of circled or parenthesized Japanese Katakana, Hangul Jamo or CJK ideographs.

The CJK compatibility block consists entirely of square symbols encoded for compatibility with various East Asian character sets. These come in four sets: square
Latin abbreviations, Chinese telegraph symbols for hours and days, squared Katakana words and a small set of Japanese historical era names.

4.1.1 Technical symbols

By definition, the space is a blank graphic. Conventions have also been established for the visible representation of the space. Three specific characters are provided
that may be used to visually represent the ASCII space character, U+2420 symbol for space, U+2422 blank symbol, and U+2423 open box. The CNS 11643 standard
encodes characters for pictures of control codes. Standard representations for control characters have been defined—for example, in ANSI X3.32 and ISO 2047. If
desired, the characters U+2400..U+241F may be used for these representations. This block encodes technical symbols, including keytop labels such as U+232B
erase to the left.

7.1.1 Mathematical Symbols

The Nimbus Global Fonts provide a large set of standard mathematical characters to support scientific, technical, and mathematical texts. In addition to the
mathematical symbols and arrows contained in this section, mathematical operators are found in the Basic Latin set. The repertoire of mathematical glyphs in
the Nimbus Global Fonts enables the display of virtually all standard mathematical symbols. Nevertheless, no collection of mathematical symbols can ever be
considered complete; mathematicians and other scientists are continually inventing new mathematical symbols. For this reason we will update our Nimbus
Global Fonts regularly (annually).

8.1.1 OTHER SYMBOLS

This block contains currency symbols, dingbats and other miscellaneous symbols.

Currency symbols are usually designed individually, and, accordingly, they may vary in shape from font to font. In some cases particular currency symbols are used for
more than one currency, while at the same time, not every currency has its own individual symbol. Therefore, Unicode recommends applying other standards such as
ISO 4217 with three-letter currency codes, e.g. USD for U.S. dollar, in all implementations requiring exact identification of the currency.

1.1.1 Nimbus GlobaL

The URW++ Nimbus Global Font family is composed of Nimbus Sans Global with four styles as light, regular, medium and bold as well as Nimbus Roman Global with
two styles as regular and bold. Additionally, the family is rounded off by Nimbus Sans Mono for applications and products using monospaced fonts with fixed character
widths.

The individual styles of the Nimbus Global family contain the following number of glyphs:

Nimbus Sans light Version 6.0 56159

regular Version 7.0 65337
medium Version 6.0 56325
bold Version 5.0 45111
Nimbus Roman regular Version 4.1 44900
bold Version 4.0 34670
Nimbus Sans monospaced Version 2.0 42375

All Nimbus Global Fonts support the following scripts:

Latein Griechisch Kyrillisch Armenisch Georgisch Arabisch
Hebräisch Devanagari Thai Chinesisch Japanisch Koreanisch
Sonderzeichen Symbole

Currently, Nimbus Sans Global regular is the most comprehensive style with 65337 glyphs. This font weight contains about 27,000 CJK (China, Japan, Korea)
unified-design Kanjis (= Japanese term for ‘Chinese character’) as well as the required variants for Japan (8,500) and Hong Kong (1,500). Moreover, all four styles
of Nimbus Sans Global contain the Indic Devanagari script which is used to write Hindi, the predominant language in India. Some of the scripts in the Nimbus Global
Fonts such as Arabic, Devanagari or CJK require so-called language features for their correct usage. For example, Arabic has four variants per character because the
form of each letter changes with its position within a word (isolated, initial, medial, final). Devanagari is even more complex with chains of up to 10 characters changing
not only form but also position when set. In Japan, Korea, Taiwan and Hong Kong, modified versions of the Kanjis with slight changes of strokes and positions
developed over time. These are included in our Global Fonts as ‘stylistic alternates’ (OpenType feature).
The comprehensiveness and complexity of the URW++ Nimbus Global Fonts require a high level of know-how and competence regarding font design, font production
and font programming. Since 2004, the URW++ Global Font team, a group of international font experts, has developed and produced seven (7) global fonts for the
highest professional requirements, and by doing so URW++ has established itself as a global font player.
The design of Nimbus Sans Global is based on Nimbus Sans, a linear sans serif or grotesque (Grotesk in Germany). It is a clear, timeless and universally useable
typeface with no unnecessary embellishments, perfectly suited for use in technical products of all kinds and in embedded devices. Because of its outstanding

C THE NIMBUS GLOBAL FONTS FAMILY ++ | A | B1 | B2 | B3 | B4 | C | D | E

characteristics and neutrality, it is also very suitable for IdentiType (corporate type). In similar fashion, the design of Nimbus Roman Global is based on Nimbus Roman.
Nimbus Roman, a transitional serif design that does not need much space, is likewise timelessly beautiful. It can be perfectly applied in combination with Nimbus Sans
Global as well as on its own.
Nimbus Sans Global Mono is derived from Nimbus Sans. All proportional glyphs, i.e. glyphs with individual character widths, have been redesigned as monospaced
glyphs, i.e. characters all with the same width. Nimbus Sans Mono is perfectly suited for all products and applications requiring monospaced fonts, but still wanting to
meet professional typographic standards. By the way, CJK Kanjis as well as Korean Hangul are always created and used with uniform fixed widths (= monospaced).

The Nimbus Global font family is a perfect typographic instrument for all applications and products that demand multilingual, high quality typography. Please note that
also existing IdentiType (corporate type) fonts can be combined with our Global Fonts; of course, after weight and style adjustments where necessary.

2.1.1 Nimbus GlobaL Harmony

Insofar as design and character complement are concerned, the Nimbus Global fonts have been uniformly produced, all of a piece, so to speak. They can be used
individually or in combination. All scripts were either created or adapted (CJK) to fit the Latin Nimbus fonts. Latin alphabets are used today by more than 2 billion
people resp. by more than 1/3 of the world’s population and for the better part of the total of 6900 languages in 193 countries. Thus, Latin is in terms of quantity as
well as quality (economic relevance) the most important script. All living scripts except for Chinese stem from the Phoenician alefbet, the forerunner of the Greek
and later Latin alphabets. Only the Chinese ideograms (Kanjis) developed completely independently. As a result of this, all scripts like Latin, Greek, Cyrillic, Armenian,
Georgian, but also Arabic and Hebrew as well as the Indic scripts, Thai and so on, can be designed to perfectly fit each other (harmonized). Of course, the harmoni-
zation needs to be done carefully, keeping in mind the individual characteristics and style of the different scripts you do not want to remove and miss. CJK and Hangul
(Korean syllabic script) are not comparable because of their separate history of origin and in terms of their design concept and impression. But still, CJK and Hangul,
like alphabetic scripts, have different styles (Hei, Song / Gothic, Mincho) and weights (light, regular, medium, bold etc) so that a CJK Hei / Gothic can very well be
combined with Nimbus Sans Global and a CJK Song / Mincho with Nimbus Roman accordingly, if the proper adjustments of the design and stroke width are done
carefully, like in the Nimbus Global Fonts.
While harmonizing the various scripts of our Nimbus Global Fonts, we paid special attention to fitting the proportions and the base lines of the glyphs, so that different
scripts as well as different styles and weights can be used in combination. This is very important for many applications and products, such as package inserts, manuals
or translation data bases, etc. All non-Latin scripts of the Nimbus Global Fonts are created and / or checked by type designers of the various countries or areas. For
years we have maintained close and long-lasting cooperation with many type designers and type experts around the world, like, for example, in China, Japan, Korea,
but also in Eastern Europe (Cyrillic), India (Devanagari, Malayalam) and in the Middle East (Arabic, Hebrew). This guarantees a very high level of technical and design
quality of all scripts individually and in combination with each other.
As a relatively small-sized font manufacturer (staff of 15 experts), we are quite proud of our global font focus. The friendly contacts and development partners all over
the world enhance our horizon in many aspects and strengthen our understanding and appreciation for other cultures. At the same time, it strongly motivates us to
explore and produce more non-Latin scripts following the specified rules for harmonizing the Nimbus Global Fonts.

2.1.1 layout Features

Layout Features in OpenType Fonts consist of either typographic or language features. The graphic design community is primarily interested in typographic features,
e.g. the integrated application of ligatures, small caps or different sets of figures for text, tables, small caps* etc. in professional layout programs. The language
features, on the other hand, control the correct setting of complex non-Latin scripts such as Arabic, Indic scripts or CJK. In Arabic, for example, the language features
control the correct setting of the initial, medial and final character forms. For Japanese, there must be a feature for alternate characters in vertical setting since
Japanese is set horizontally and vertically, often in the same document. For CJK, there must be a feature for the usage of simplified and traditional letter forms, but
also for the various alternates used in Japan, Korea, Taiwan and Hong Kong. Almost all writing systems derived from the Indic Brahmi script like Devanagari, Tibetan,
Khmer and Tamil have complex rules for position-dependent letters and ligatures. OpenType fonts are structured technically like TrueType fonts. Among other
advantages over the earlier PostScript Type 1 format, OTF fonts have all relevant information and tables for the images, the spacing, the kerning and the features in
one file. OpenType is more than just a font format, it offers a fully structured architecture, which can be enhanced at will. In theory, personal features can be defined
and programmed in OTF by any font developer.

2.2.1 Arabic

Arabic characters can have up to four different variants depending on the position with a word:
Basic form, isolated form (mostly identical with basic form), initial, medial, final.

Complex Devanagari syllable formation is possible using the wide range of features available in OpenType.

The following examples show how the shaping engine applies the OpenType features, one at a time to the input string. These combinations do not necessarily
represent actual syllables or words, but are meant to illustrate the various OpenType features in a Devanagari font.

The following chart informs about the current character complement for all styles of Nimbus Sans Global and Nimbus Roman Global. The table includes the latest number of glyphs available for the
corresponding Unicode block / range. The differences between the numbers specified in Unicode and the actual numbers in the fonts mainly result from control glyphs and / or irrelevant glyphs.
There are gaps for Indic scripts with only Devanagari presently available (2010). More Indic scripts are said to be added in 2011, though.

3.2.1 GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE UNICODE STANDARD

To date, most countries maintain their own standards for the encoding of glyphs. Since 1990, there is a superordinate, common standard called Unicode. As the name implies, there is only one single
code per glyph. The different code pages for Mac and Windows for the many scripts have been standardized by Unicode. Unicode provides two bytes per glyph, which allows for approximately 65,000
glyphs in the first plane. Over and above that, there can be more than 65,000 glyphs in Unicode in several plains. Unicode 5.0 already defines more than 100,000 glyphs. Theoretically, the number of
glyphs in Unicode is unlimited, but OpenType can in fact only store and process circa 65,000 glyphs (2 byte limit).

4.1.1 Country-Script-Index
The Country Script Index is an overview of all languages and scripts sorted by country name. We created this table for product planning purposes primarily since at the beginning of a new project,
planners define the countries or areas in which a new product shall be marketed. Some countries have two or more languages or several scripts. The index also informs about the corresponding
Unicode ranges and includes information if special characters are used in a country, e.g. ‘ß’ for Germany.

1.1.1 CLIENT SUPPORT

Hotline customer support and consulting are extremely important to us, since our customers give us many ideas and impulses for improving and enhancing our
font products. Software projects like the development of our Nimbus Global Fonts are never completely finished, but rather updated in versions. Just think of the
CJK glyph set which in Unicode 5.0 already exceeds the 2-byte-limit of OpenType, or local CJK variants used in Japan, Korea, Taiwan and Hong Kong, to
understand that this is a continuous, long-range development project taken on by URW++. Consequently, we update and expand the glyph set in our Nimbus
Global Fonts regularly for our clients.
We have been working on our Nimbus Global Fonts since 2003, but in fact, we have been developing digital fonts and font design and production programs since
1980 (IKARUS). We have learned a lot about type in these last 30 years. This font design, font production and font programming know-how flows in its entirety into
our Nimbus Global Fonts.
We are a small font company and therefore do not maintain an external hotline responding to our customers’ questions. If you call URW++, you won’t end up on
hold but you will talk to one of our type experts right away.

We look forward to receiving your next call or e-mail!
