Big Ideas/Unit Goals:

Big Ideas
1. Students will learn how to properly execute an underhand/overhand serve, forearm pass (bump), and set. What are the critical features of each skill?
2. What are the terms that are used in volleyball?
3. What are the basic rules of a volleyball game that will be used in this class?
4. Are students using their communication their communication skills and demonstrating positive behavior during activities and game play?

Unit Goals
Psychomotor
Students will be able to demonstrate the proper technique shown for a forearm pass (bumping), setting, and serving.
Cognitive
Students will be able to identify the critical features of each skill, recognize the terminology used in the volleyball, and identify the basic rules of a game.
Affective
Students will be able to be sensitive to the differences in physical ability levels of other students.

Unit Summary:
In this unit, we will be learning the critical features/teaching cues (or steps) on how to execute a proper forearm pass, how to set a volleyball, and how to do
an overhand/underhand serve. We will be practicing these skills through a variety of games and activities, and will lead into an actual game of volleyball.
Also, we will be learning important terms and the basic rules of a volleyball such as limiting volleys to three hits, proper rotation, where to stand when
serving, and common faults (fouls) that players commit. Students will be tested on their ability to perform each skill, the material we have learned in this
class, and demonstrate positive behavior around their peers and during game play.
NOTE: I know some of you are not volleyball athletes, so I do not expect you to execute each skill perfectly. Although, I do expect you to come out ready to
learn and we will focus on improvement and enhancing your performance.

the critical features their partner must use to
perform the skill. Students will evaluate each
volleyball skill (serve, bump, set, and spike) and
then switch roles.
“My Game” Activity
Students will watch a video where a teacher
created their own unique game that was designed
to help students practice working on their
volleyball skills. For this portion, students will
create ONE activity that focuses on enhancing one
or more of the volleyball skills that they have
learned (serving, bumping, setting, or spiking).
They will list the rules of their game and draw a
diagram/picture that helps describe their activity.
Students must create their own unique activity or

that are provided as a starting point Which means
if they are using an activity from the links they
must change the rules, equipment, or goal and
make it your own. In addition, the activity must
include everyone and no elimination games.
