REPLACE TOWER CRANES – Marjan And Zuluf

1 INTRODUCTION
The purpose of “Replace 17 Tower Crane at Marjan and Zuluf” Project (the PROJECT)
is to support the SAUDI ARAMCO Organization’s (COMPANY) objective of retaining
the Oil and Gas production flexibility by the full replacement of seventeen of the
existing tower cranes in order to obtain load lifting capacity required to effectively and
safely operate and maintain the Marjan and Zuluf Complexes. These tower cranes
were installed from 1976 to 1984 and contain corroded and obsolete parts. The
original manufacturer of some of the crane types is no longer in business and
substitute spare parts are increasingly difficult to obtain. This has resulted in prolonged
downtimes and is affecting operations at the present time. This replacement is critical
to maintaining the Marjan and Zuluf Platforms, providing safe working conditions and
eliminating the risk of a catastrophic failure in the event of a crane failure.
The Marjan offshore facilities consist of three offshore GOSPs (GOSP-1, GOSP-2,
GOSP-3) and one Gas Compression Plant (GCP). The Marjan offshore complex
contains nine tower cranes.
The Zuluf offshore complex that consists of Zuluf GOSPs 1, 2, 3, and 4 contains eight
tower cranes (each GOSP has two cranes).
The GOSPs are located approximately 80 -100 kilometers from Safaniya Onshore in
the Arabian Gulf.

For conservative estimates of loads, the analysis was performed assuming the wind,
waves and current acting collinearly.

7.4 Other Particulars and Assumptions

The platform legs are considered to have a tie-in capacity of 50t (refer Attachment #3)
each.
The number of fenders which are in contact with the sausage fenders are considered
as per the mooring arrangement plans (Attachment 1). They have been modelled as
general spring compression only connectors with load-deflection law extracted from
Yokohama fenders catalogue, for a 3000 x 5000-0.5 kgf /cm2 buoy.

8 ANALYSIS METHODOLOGY

The berthing analysis is performed using MOSES software program module. MOSES
is an acronym for Multi-Operational Structural Engineering Simulator. This is a
combined marine and structural package designed to describe a system and perform
a simulation including stress analysis at different phases of the simulation arising from
marine situation. In essence, MOSES accepts a 3-dimensional model of a vessel
and/or a tubular structure. The user can then combine the two or more structures in
various ways and perform either static, frequency domain or time domain analyses.
The program computes hydrostatics, load out, stability, sea keeping, mooring,
launching, lifting and upending by using the same basic input.
A 3D diffraction panel model was generated using MOSES, as in the following figure.
The hull of the barge is represented by 534 diffraction panel with a maximum mesh
size of 2.5m, where diagonal length of panel is less than 1/6 of smallest wave length,
as per DNV-RP-C205 [Ref. 3]. Roll damping is kept as default level in MOSES. The
exposed wind area is modelled as per vessel GA and is as shown in Fig.8.

Figure 13: Coordinate in MOSES

The expected line tension is derived from a computer simulation time of 3000 seconds
(as outlined in API RP 2SK) using JONSWAP spectrum, where the predicted 3hr max
values are reported. Analyses are carried out for environmental loads acting to the
Stern Sea (0deg), Stern Quarter Sea (45 and 315deg), Beam Sea (90 and 270deg),
Bow Quarter Sea (135 and 225deg) and Bow/Head Sea (180deg) for environmental
data. Wind and current directions are assumed to be same as the wave direction
(worst case).

10 CONCLUSION

3D hydrodynamic analysis using MOSES has been performed for the berthing
operation using Working Boat Zamil501 alongside platforms at MARJAN field. The
environmental condition follows:

The result founds that:

 Maximum predicted total impact load on fenders of jacket is 22.97MT. which is
within 150MT allowable limit of boat landing fender.
 Maximum predicted load on mooring line is 18.75MT, which is within 50MT
allowable tie-in capacity of jacket leg.
 Maximum predicted load on mooring line is within 20MT allowable SWL
capacity of vessel bollards and allowable line load of 39.6MT.
 Maximum predicted load on vessel bollard is 19.7MT, which is within 20MT
allowable SWL capacity of vessel bollards.
