EDU 527 UNIT PLAN

Lesson 1
Students will rewrite an expression using powers and exponents. Students will use
manipulatives to expand an exponent into a product of factors. Students will then
play a matching game on the Eno board to match the correct power to exponent,
expanded form, and written form. Students will then complete an independent
worksheet with repetition of problems from Eno Board.

Lesson 2
Students will evaluate expressions using order of operations. Students will
complete a vocabulary graphic organizer. Students will then fill in guided notes on
the steps to evaluate expressions using order of operations. Students will answer
an exit ticket via google forms on their iPad.

Lesson 3

Instructional Objective
Students will be able to evaluate an algebraic expression utilizing order of
operations and substitution. Students will evaluate five expressions with 80%
accuracy

Standards/Key Concepts
6.EE.2: Write, read, and evaluate expressions in which letters stand for numbers.
6.EE.2C: Identify parts of an expression using mathematical terms (sum, term,
product, factor, quotient, coefficient); view one or more parts of an expression as
a single entity
6.EE.6: Use variables to represent numbers and write expressions when solving a
real-world or mathematical problem; understand that a variable can represent an
unknown number, or, depending on the purpose at hand, any number in a
specified set.
Motivation
Students will review previously taught parts of an expression. Utilizing a pocket
chart, student will come up to the board and match a vocabulary card to the
correct part of an expression.

Materials
Guided Notes
Eno Board
Ipads
QR code Task Cards
Vocabulary Cards

Adaptations
Student with a visual impairment will have an enlarged copy of note/individual set
of enlarged task cards

Strategies
Do Now- Students will review content specific vocabulary
Direct Instruction- Students will fill in notes with guidance/ support from teacher
Small group Instruction- Students will answer task cards in a small group with iPad
to self-check work

Differentiated Instruction
Homogeneous Grouping-
Below Grade Level- Students below grade level will evaluate one-step expressions
On Grade Level- Students on grade level will evaluate two- step expressions
Above grade level- These students will evaluate multi-step expressions with
multiple variables.

Developmental Procedures
1. The teacher will introduce the Do Now activity. Students will math vocabulary
with the associated picture example on a large pocket chart. (What is a variable?
What is the operation? What is an exponent? What is an algebraic expression?
Numerical expression?)
2. The teacher will distribute the guided notes. On the eno board students will
follow along with a visual model of evaluating an algebraic expression. (Name the
variable and operation? How do we substitute to evaluate the expression?)
3. After doing several examples together, the students will complete one problem
independently. Student volunteer will come up to Eno board and answer
problem/explain to classmates steps to evaluate the expression. (How did you
evaluate the expression? Where/Why did you substitute?)
4. Students will be placed in homogeneous groups and answer four task cards.
They are able to work as a group. Each task card has an associated QR code where
the group can self-check their work. (How did you evaluate your expression? If you
got it wrong, where did you make your mistake?)
5. Students will complete an exit ticket through google forms on their device.

Assessment

Students will complete an exit ticket based on their group ability. The exit ticket
will be assessed to help determine Do Now activity for the following day.

Independent Practice
Students will complete five problems containing one step and two step algebraic
expressions.

Academic Intervention
After reviewing the exit ticket, I would make an Independent Do Now activity for
the following day. Students who did not comprehend the lesson will be pulled for
a small group reteach of skills while the class completes the independent Do Now.

Academic Enrichment
Students who have completed assignments quickly, will be able to take an iPad
and complete a Castle Learning assignment with more challenging expressions
and word problems.

Lesson 4
Students will translate written expressions into algebraic expressions. Students
will complete a graphic organizer for each written expression. Students will then
work in their small groups to answer task cards as a group. They will scan QR
codes to self- check their work. As an exit ticket, students will match written
expressions to algebraic expressions on the class pocket chart.
Lesson 5
Students will define the five properties of mathematics. Students will complete a
vocabulary graphic organizer of the definitions. Students will utilize the computer
lab to create a power point of the definitions. Students can utilize notes, internet
resources, and graphics to make the presentation visually appealing. Students will
present for a grade and be assessed on a rubric.
