These units are structured according to their task-responsibility-reporting relationship as can be seen in Fig. 3.3 depicting the organisational chart of the housing units project. The number of organisational units depends upon the magnitude and com- plexity of the project. A simple project may have only a few organisational units whereas a large number of interacting organisational units are required for a large, complex project. Ina major project, each organisational unit is usually headed by a manager and it is referred toas a responsibility centre. Ina typical project, the responsibility centres can be broadly divided into three categories, viz. production centres, support service centres and management and administration centres. Production Centres— A production centre consists of one or more work centres. A work centre is entrusted with the execution of a group of ac- tivities constituting one or more work packages. The work packages in a work centre are identifiable, measurable and costable units. This con- cept makes it possible to express the input resources and expected per- formance of each work centre in physical and monetary terms.Service Centres — Service centres support production centres with tech- nical, material, manpower equipment and general services like accom- modation and temporary utility services. Examples of such investment-oriented centres are readymix concrete production plant, steel reinforcement fabrication workshop, metallic doors and windows fabrication unit and plant and machinery operation and maintenance establishment.
