Based on the results from the pre-test, I found that adding, subtracting,
multiplying, and dividing decimals was new to almost all the students. The class
average was 0.173% and the majority of the class only got 1, if any, question right.
The one question that was consistently correct was the addition problem because
some of them knew enough to line up the decimals. A lot of those same students also
lined up the decimal in the subtraction problem but didn’t know to add zeros to
make the numbers the same length, which lead to simple math mistakes. The most
common mistake made when adding and subtracting was not lining up the decimals
points, which as lines up the places values. The most common mistake made when
multiplying and dividing decimals was not knowing were to place or move the
decimal point. When I teach these lessons I will plan to on focus on the importance
of lining up the decimal places and add any zeros needed to make the numbers the
same length. I will also focus on knowing where to place and move the decimal
points when multiplying and dividing decimals. I will incorporate multiple
examples, practice problems, and interactive activities so the students can see, do,
and learn in different ways.

After teaching the lessons, the scores of the post-test were much better and I
saw a lot of good progress. The students were able to raise their average from a
0.173% to a 76%. On the pre-test only one student with a perfect score, but there
were 10 students with prefect scores on the post-test. There were quite a few
students that got an incorrect answer from making simple math errors but still
showed that they understood the process. This mistake can be fixed by double
checking their work or slowing down so they don’t skip something. There were still
some students that struggled with multiplying and dividing decimals but picked up
pretty well on adding and subtracting. I think these students just need some more
time to interpret multiply and dividing decimals. For this to happen, I will let the
students correct the problem they missed and find where they made a mistake. Once
they know what they did wrong and how it should be done correctly, I will let the
students retry a similar problem until they get it right. Overall, I was pleased with
the improvement they made and hope to see more of them continue to improve.
