ORGANIZATION OF STUDENTS: Students will be in pairs sitting on the poly dots scattered across the gym. The
“tagger” and the “runner” will be standing up in different places from the gym.
ACTIVITY SET UP:

INSTRUCTIONS:
● Object
Object of the game is for the tagger to tag the runner before they sit down. Once a few people have been
tagged, more poly dots will be taken away and the groups must try to find a dot to sit on before everyone
else, or else they will become the tagger.
● Organization of equipment and students:
There will be enough poly dots for each group except one on the ground at the very beginning of the game
for each group to sit. As the game progresses, more and more dots will be taken away. There will be a “safe
zone” behind one of the black lines in the gym that the students will all run to once I blow my whistle. Afer
that, I will take away some of the poly dots, in order to create more taggers.
● Anticipatory Set:
Raise your hand if you have ever played tag before?
Raise your hand if you have ever played musical chairs before?
Teacher explains how the poly dots will serve as the chairs in musical chairs and how this game relates to
tag.
● Directions:
1. Teacher sets up enough poly dots so each group except one is able to sit down.
2. With the group that doesn’t find the dot, the person who is younger is the tagger and the older person
is the runner.
3. The runners goal is to run to a group that is sitting down and sit on the ground before the tagger tags
them.
4. If the runner makes it to the poly dot first, that group becomes the runner and the tagger, with 5
seconds to give the runner time to space his/herself.
5. If the tagger tags the runner first, they switch roles. They will also have 5 seconds to create space
between the two.
6. After 3-4 times of people switching with people on dots, the teacher will blow the whistle and
everyone has to get to the “safe zone” behind a black line.
7. The teacher will remove 3 or 4 poly dots to create more taggers and runner.
8. The teacher will give a count of three, and the last groups that can’t find the poly dots become the
taggers and runners, base off of age.
9. The game will keep going until there is only one group left.
● Demonstration:
The teacher will explain all 9 steps, while using 3 groups to be an example. One group will be the runner
and taggers, and the other 2 will sit on the dots. Once they have demonstrated the first part, the teacher
will then blow the whistle and have the students get behind the “safe zone” and remove one of the poly
dots to explain the second part of instruction. Teacher will make sure to explain what happens when
students either get tagged or sit next to another group.
● Variations
The students can switch partners after each time they are in the “safe zone”
The students can also run, skip, slide, and walk
TEACHING TIPS/MODIFICATIONS:
-The teacher can blow their whistle, to create more taggers and runners
-The teacher can call the taggers and runners other names, like cops and robbers
-Each time the children are in the safe zone, the teacher can allow the students to create a different movement
(like running, skipping, hopping, jogging)
SAFETY:
Do not bump head when running or sitting next to groups
Do not trip other groups that are running passed each other
No pushing or pulling of the runners or taggers
