 The Remarkable
Teddie-Joy Remhild
Ability Anyware Digital Quarterly was
saddened to discover that Teddie-Joy
Remhild passed away recently. Ms.
Remhild was a blind mother, former
program director, educator, disability
rights activist, prodigious writer, and
incredible source of inspiration for the
disability community. She had a
contagious enthusiasm, positive
outlook on life, and profound
determination in advocating on
behalf of individuals with disabilities.
She had impeccable skills with
assessing, articulating, and addressing
the needs of the disability community.
Her name appeared frequently in
numerous records of disability
commission meetings and disability
rights publications. For more

Teddie-Joy left an indelible imprint with serving
more than 40 years in the disability advocacy
field. She will be deeply missed. We thank her for
being such a terrific mentor, compassionate soul,

 "Uplyfting" Partnerships with Disability Advocacy Organizations
Empowering Lyft’s Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing
Community
Lyft is all about improving people’s lives with
the world’s best transportation. Today, we’re
announcing two product improvements and
a partnership to empower our deaf and hard-
of-hearing drivers, paving the way for
smoother rides all around.
Amped-Up Ride Requests:
Lyft drivers who are deaf or hard of hearing
have told us that they often lose out on rides
because they miss the audible “ping” that
typically alerts drivers to a ride request. Here’s
where Amp — Lyft’s new, in-car
communication device — comes in. Deaf
and hard-of-hearing drivers will now see new
ride requests displayed on their Amp device,
with text reading “NEW RIDE.” This is just one
more way that Amp continues to better
connect our drivers and passengers.
Passenger Notifications:
Passengers will also experience a new app
feature, letting them know that their driver is
deaf or hard of hearing before their Lyft
arrives. Through an SMS notification,
passengers will be alerted to contact their
driver by text rather than by phone, and to be
sure to let the driver lead the way with
communication.
National Association of the Deaf Partnership:
We’re also excited to announce a new
partnership with the National Association of
the Deaf (NAD). Through this partnership, Lyft
and NAD will work together to develop further
app improvements, grow awareness of
economic opportunities for the deaf and
hard-of-hearing, and engage policymakers
on the importance of ridesharing access.
With these product improvements and this
new partnership, we’re committed to
continuing to deliver a seamless, safe, and

Federation of the Blind, we’re working to
increase awareness of blind passengers’

improving the ride experience for blind
passengers:

We’re working alongside National Federation
of the Blind’s Access Technology staff to make
our app more accessible to blind passengers.
Educating the public and policymakers
We’re collaborating with the National
Federation of the Blind to educate the public
and policymakers on the importance of
access to transportation, and how ridesharing
can improve the lives of blind passengers.
We’re also participating in the National
Federation of the Blind’s National Convention
this summer in Orlando.
Educating drivers
With the help of the National Federation of
the Blind, we have updated Lyft’s service
animal policy for riders to provide clear
instructions for drivers so they can offer
welcoming and comfortable rides to blind
and low vision passengers. Lyft is also
committing to ongoing education to its driver
community about the policy, and why it’s
important to blind and low vision riders.
At Lyft, we celebrate a diverse culture where
everyone feels welcome and respected. Our
partnership with the National Federation of
the Blind reflects an important step in our
commitment to bringing the world’s best
transportation to everyone — regardless of

What is digital literacy? How can one
acquire it? When do we need it? Digital
literacy is the ability to understand/use
digital devices and interpret digital content.
Digital literacy is required on a daily basis for
tasks such as communication, work related
activities, school assignments, shopping, travel,
recreation. Digital literacy can fill a
communication gap for individuals with
difficulty speaking or articulating words.
Autism Expressed provides specialized training/
lessons to help adolescents develop their
digital literacy/life skills. They have different
modules for understanding the Internet,
safety, daily activities, education, and
professional development.
UCLA, a Pathway of Study for Students with
Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities
UCLA Extension offers a variety of courses for
adults with diverse interests. This includes
Pathway, a specialized curriculum for students
with intellectual and developmental
disabilities. "Pathway at UCLA Extension is a
two-year certificate program for students with
intellectual and other developmental
disabilities, offering a blend of educational,
social, and vocational experiences, taught
and supervised by experienced

instructors sensitive to the individual needs of
our students. On campus, Pathway students
attend classes and participate with UCLA
students in the many social, recreational, and
cultural activities of a major university."

Programs like Project GET SAFE in hospitals,
schools, day treatment programs, and
residential facilities help reduce safety risks
and protect the vulnerable segment of our
population. This includes individuals with
disabilities, children, and seniors. Please

Common shortage of manpower in hospitals,
residential facilities, and day treatment
programs can lead to insufficient monitoring
during moments that are critical to personal

Café Elysa, THE Deaf & Disability Friendly Venue in Carlsbad
Ability Anyware Digital Quarterly was recently on a quest to
find disability friendly restaurants in the Carlsbad area. This
was when we discovered a quaint and memorable eatery
called Café Elysa. First, we were mesmerized by the exquisite,
eye-feasting gourmet French pastries in the display case. To
make our visit even better, the staff was very courteous, well-
informed, and helpful regarding our questions about the site's
with ample outdoor seating for Pacific Ocean breeze
enhanced dining, has been operating in Carlsbad for close to
20 years.

Shortly after placing an order at the counter with the delightful
hostess, we were thrilled to find out that Deaf culinary artists
were preparing Café Elysa's delectable treats! We had the
pleasure of meeting two of these talented employees during
our visit. We thoroughly enjoyed the almond croissant with the
almond cream filled center and crunchy bits of almond
sprinkles paired with a delicious vanilla chai latte. We are most
definitely looking forward to visiting again. We will partake of
the other delicious choices for breakfast (omelets, quiche,
Benedicts to name a few) and lunch (chicken avocado
sandwich, burger, Cobb salad). And yes, they have a health
menu (veggie burger)!
Hearing employees can communicate in American Sign
Language (ASL) which makes it a warm experience for patrons
and employees who are Deaf. We are honored to feature
Café Elysa in our publication and thank them for their inclusive
hiring practices and space, including wheelchair accessible
entrances, a service dog friendly patio, and a restroom with a
grab bar. We regard Café Elysa as THE Deaf and disability
friendly eatery in Carlsbad!
