The Negative Effects of the Media: (20 mins) 1) Explain that the media has many negative effects on body image including: disordered perception of body image, unrealistic standards to what is considered beautiful, ideal body types are not realistic or achievable, creates a form of comparison, and can lead people to go to extremes. 2) Have the students get into pairs and using the computers find two advertisements (one portraying an unrealistic body of a female, and one of a male). Explain that When the body is supplied with more energy than it can use it will be stored as fat. To maintain weight there needs to be a balance between energy intake and expenditure. 5) Explain height and weight charts and that they provide a quick reference for measuring average height weight range. They do not take into account body types, muscle weight, or bone density. 6) Explain weight ranges. Measure around waist near belly button while standing relaxed. Measure around hips where they are the largest. Divide waist measure by hip measure. Ratio should be less than 0.80 for women and 0.95 for men. 7) Explain BMI as a height to weight ratio. Divide height in kilograms by height in metres. BMI greater than 27.8 for males and 27.3 reflects a state of obesity. 8) Explain electrical impedance as a method to test body fat using a harmless electrical current.
