Body of Body Image: (10 mins) -Discussion of
Lesson 1) Ask the students to think about how the ideal body how the ideal
type of men and women that is portrayed in the body is portrayed

why these images are not realistic and how they
could alter our perception on body image.
2) Explain that the average Canadian watches about 30
hours of TV a week and spends even more time on
the internet. Advertising accounts for 30% of the TV
air time. Social media is frequently used such as
Instagram, facebook, twitter, tumblr, and snapchat.
Magazines also have unrealistic portrayals of the
ideal body image.
3) Discuss advertising and explain that although the
goal of advertising is to get us to buy things, they
usually do not use people who look like us. Explain
that these images are photo shopped to make the
model appear flawless. Show the students a before
and after photo of a model who was on the cover of a
magazine (in PowerPoint). Have the students point
out some of the differences.
4) Show this video on Photoshop
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iYhCn0jf46U
5) Discuss the video and how it relates to the discussion
of body image and what society’s idea of “beautiful”
is.
Social Media (5 min)
1) Discuss how social media can have an impact on
body image. Ask the students how many people have
some type of social media. Ask them what types of
images they see on their social media relating to
body image. 73% of online teens have used social
media before. Ads pop up on social media sites.
Discuss “instagram models.”
2) Use the example of Alexis Ren, the Instagram model
who has over 9 million followers. Explain that
although her life looks perfect from social media, she
admitted in April that she actually struggles with an
eating disorder.
Eating Disorders: (5 min)
1) Explain that the media can have extremely negative
effects on body image. Explain that these disordered
ideal body type in the media can have people go to
extremes to achieve this look.
2) Discuss anorexia nervosa. Explain that it is is an
eating disorder characterized by low weight, fear of
gaining weight, and a strong desire to be thin,
resulting in food restriction. Many people with
anorexia see themselves as overweight even though
they are in fact underweight.
3) Discuss Bulimia nervosa. Explain that it is an eating
disorder characterized by binge eating followed by
purging.
4) Discuss over exercising. Explain that
compulsive exercise is another way to "purge"
calories and it can be as dangerous as Anorexia and
Bulimia. The main goal when an individual is
suffering from compulsive exercise can be burning
calories, relieving the guilt from eating/bingeing, or
to give them the permission to eat.
Performance Enhancing Substances: (5 min)
1) Discuss performance enhancing substances and how
they relate to body image. Some turn to performance
enhancing substances to achieve the ideal body type.
Performance enhancing drugs can increase muscle
size, strength, and aid with weight loss.
2) Discuss some of the health risks of taking
performance enhancing substances such as Increased
risk of tendinitis and tendon rupture, liver
abnormalities and tumors, increased low-density
lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol (the "bad" cholesterol),
decreased high-density lipoprotein (HDL)
cholesterol (the "good" cholesterol), high blood
pressure (hypertension), heart and circulatory issues.
The Negative Effects of the Media: (20 mins)
1) Explain that the media has many negative effects on
body image including: disordered perception of body
image, unrealistic standards to what is considered
beautiful, ideal body types are not realistic or
achievable, creates a form of comparison, and can
lead people to go to extremes.
2) Have the students get into pairs and using the
computers find two advertisements (one portraying
an unrealistic body of a female, and one of a male).
With each ad they need to write down what type of
body it is portraying, and three reasons that it is
unrealistic. For each ad have them also write down
what a negative consequence could be for someone
viewing this image. Make sure that the students
know that we will be sharing these ideas as a class
afterwards.
3) Have some partners share their ads with the class and
have a discussion on the findings.
Body Composition: (15 min)
1) Explain that body composition is the amount of fat in
the body compared to the amount of lean mass.
2) Explain that obesity is a condition where a person’s
excess fat accumulation results in a body weight that
exceeds desirable weight by 20% or more.
3) Explain that overweight is a condition in which a
person’s excess fat accumulation results in a body
weight that exceeds desirable eight by 1% to 19%.
4) Ask the students if they know how we gain weight.
Explain that When the body is supplied with more
energy than it can use it will be stored as fat. To
maintain weight there needs to be a balance between
energy intake and expenditure.
5) Explain height and weight charts and that they
provide a quick reference for measuring average
height weight range. They do not take into account
body types, muscle weight, or bone density.
6) Explain weight ranges. Measure around waist near
belly button while standing relaxed. Measure around
hips where they are the largest. Divide waist measure
by hip measure. Ratio should be less than 0.80 for
women and 0.95 for men.
7) Explain BMI as a height to weight ratio. Divide
height in kilograms by height in metres. BMI greater
than 27.8 for males and 27.3 reflects a state of
obesity.
8) Explain electrical impedance as a method to test
body fat using a harmless electrical current. Show

9) Explain skinfold measurements as measurements to
determine the thickness of the fat layer that lies
immediately beneath the skin using a caliper. Show

10) Explain Hydrostatic weighing. Weighing the body
while submerged in water. Precise method to
determine amounts of fat and lean body mass. Show

3) Ask the students what some ways we could promote
positive body image are.
4) Ask the students what body composition is and how
we can measure it.
