STUCK BREAKER PILL

STUCK BREAKER PILL PLACEMENT AND RELATED ISSUES.

1. The basic idea behind pill volume calculation is the assumption that normally BHA is stuck and the entire BHA should
be submerged in Spotting fluid.Additional volume is added for hole enlargement due to caving and for pumping the
fluid after every half an hour and keep the BHA soaked during periodical pumping.
2. In rare cases the free point may be above BHA. Hence it is preferable to calculate free point by Mechanical stretch
method and if no well control issues are there, the pill should be placed to drill pipes also up to free point.
TOTAL INNER VOLUME OF BHA: V1

TOTAL ANNULAR VOLUME AROUND BHA: V2

TOTAL VOLUME TO BE PUMPED: V

V=V1 +V2×1.25 TO 3^ + (100 metre × inside capacity of drill pipe/metre) *
^= 25 to 30% for hole enlargement
*= extra height inside drill pipe compared to annulus

3. Pill should preferably be placed within 2 hours. With passage of time the free point tends to
move up in the string.
4. Trip tank should be ready and properly lined up with HSD filling line to save time.
5. Pill pumping time should be as low as possible.
6. Placing a Pill having HSD only has very limited effect. At least 3% of pipe lax or other special
stuck breaker chemical should be added to HSD to get desired result.
7. Let it soak for 6-8 hours for compression if the string got stuck up while pulling out / picking
the string up and there is atleast a few metre of clearance below bit/ bit should not be at bottom.
8. Apply tension and monitor continuously if the string got stuck while running in / lowering the
drill string if there is a little open hole below the bit.

9. To place the pill correctly pump the pill and then displace it by total inside volume V3 of surface
lines and drill pipe string between point A and B.
10. In case of high mud weight, pump a spacer of high viscosity mud ahead of the pill to prevent migration of stuck breaker pill to
the surface lines during soaking.
11. To prevent back flow of spotting fluid, close Kelly cock / safety valve in closed position during soaking. Open only during
pumping.
12. Pump 5 strokes every half an hour ( after initial soaking period of 6- 8 hours) and work on the string.
13. Working on string should between maximum pull or set down weight in the opposite direction to the direction in which it was
moving before getting stuck and neutral ( free hanging drill pipe string weight ) in the direction of stuck up.
14. Careful cycling of torque by using rotary will also help. Utmost care should be taken while releasing the torque to
prevent opening drill string down hole.
