Converging Lens Laboratory

In this activity, you will examine how the object distance and the height of an object affect
the height and distance of the image created. You will use the Simbucket website at the
URL, https://simbucket.com/lensesandmirrors/

For this simulation, make sure that you have the simulation set to Lens Mode. If this
is set correctly you will see the word Lens at the top of the web page.

***Please make sure that you have a Convex Lens chosen for this activity. If the
word Converging is circled at the top of the page, then you are set up
correctly.***

***Set the Focal Length to 20cm. If it isn’t already, use the “f” slider to set the
Focal Point to 20cm.***

Your Task:
• Your job is to complete the table below by filling in the blank spaces with
measurements found from the simulation.
• To set the object distance you will click and drag the object until you reach the
desired distance. To set the object height, use the “H” slider on the bottom
until you reach the desired height.
• Once you have set the object height and object distance to the values
indicated in the Converging Lens Table, record your results.
• Once the table is filled, answer the questions on the last page.

***If the object height or the object distance are blank in the Converging Lens Table,
you must choose your own values and collect then collect the measurements.***

Conclusions:

1. From the measurements that you recorded in the Converging Lens Table
above, what happened when you changed the object height but kept the
object distance constant?

2. From the measurements that you recorded in the Converging Lens Table
above, what happened when you changed the object distance but kept the
object height constant?

3. What is the relationship between the distance an object is placed from a lens
and the height of the image created.
