Abstract
The present document describes all the functionalities provided by the application
STEADYCONTROL®. This application is an in-board process that records data needed for
rotor and absorbers tuning. Concerning the rotor tuning, it can either be the main rotor, the tail
rotor or even a propeller. Absorbers tuning dealt with two or three absorbers, depending on
the helicopter type. During all the acquisition phase, the inboard process computes Level and
Angles for all the connected sensors with one used as the top input. The results are stored on a
PCMCIA card and displayed on the remote control. They can be directly used by
STEADYCONTROL® Rotor to compute Rotor Tuning, or used by STEADYCONTROL®
Absorber to compute absorbers tuning and by STEADYCONTROL® Graph to display
computed Modules. Generic recording can also be made at different sampling rates in order to
compute and check different vibratory levels. STEADYCONTROL® Spectrum just displays
FFT of vibration data on graphs and some flight information.

1. Preamble

1.1. Introduction

This user’s manual lists the different STEADYCONTROL® functionalities and gives
explanation how to use them. STEADYCONTROL® is an in-board process to collect
vibratory measures and to compute levels and angles of the collected data. Those measures
are either dedicated to rotor or propeller tuning as an input of the STEADYCONTROL®
Rotor Software, or dedicated to absorbers tuning as an input of the STEADYCONTROL®
Absorber Software. Nevertheless the application can be used to characterize any vibratory
system and FFT can be computed on every recorded signals thanks the
STEADYCONTROL® Spectrum.

1.2. Global System view

To find the calibration parameters for rotor tuning, EUROCOPTER has developed a
global method based on vibratory study. This method can be divided in two steps:
- Vibratory data recording for rotor tuning with the Steady Stand Alone process so
called STEADYCONTROL®,
- Signal Analysis based on neural method to give the rotor tuning parameters (tab,
weight, and pitch-link) with the STEADYCONTROL® Rotor software.
Concerning absorbers tuning, the method is also divided in two steps:
- Vibratory data recording for Absorbers with STEADYCONTROL® V3.0,
- Signal Analysis based on identification function to give the absorbers tuning
parameters (weight or localization) with the STEADYCONTROL® Absorber
software.
Nevertheless any vibratory data can be collected and studied thanks two steps also:
- Generic vibratory data recording with STEADYCONTROL® V3.0 at 1250, 1650
or 2500Hz in order to analyze periodic signals up to 625, 825 or 1250Hz
(Bandwidth).
- Spectrum Analysis based on Fast Fourrier Transform computation with the
STEADYCONTROL® Spectrum software.

Figure 1: System architecture

The STEADYCONTROL® application is in charge of collecting data during flights in

order to optimize the calibration parameters to reduce the vibratory factors. Nevertheless this
is a general application that can be used for any type of vibratory study. It collects vibratory
data synchronized with a rotor top signal. Measures are done thanks to sensors called
accelerometers that give the accelerations in mg in several points of the machine. A magnetic
or an optical sensor measures the rotor top.

After the acquisition sequence (driven by the control command), the signal is decomposed
with the Fast Fourier Transform in five harmonics. Modulus, phases and also the data average
are computed on several segments. This decomposition is based on data stored in PCMCIA
card. Concerning Rotor Tuning, those data are dedicated to a particular frequency. Therefore
there is a set of data for each type of helicopter and for each kind of application. The results
will be displayed as Levels and angles. Segments are used in order to check the evolution and
the stability of the signal during the acquisition phase. The results are stored directly on a
PCMCIA ATA flash card. Each record will create a dedicated file. The results of the last
flight type can be displayed for the main rotor tuning for each harmonic and each type of
flight. The card can be used in STEADYCONTROL® Rotor application to provide the rotor
tuning parameters. The different configuration parameters and some constants used for the
signal analysis are stored on another PCMCIA card called Data card. Concerning Absorbers,
there is only one flight stage. The recorder data and results are also stored on the PCMCIA
Card with the configuration parameters of the helicopter. They can be displayed for the
different harmonic and used by STEADYCONTROL® Absorber in order to compute the
tuning. The data of Generic record for signals with a Bandwidth up to 625, 825 or 1250 Hz
will be stored in specific locations and files with the activated channel corresponding to the
selected frequency. The signal analysis will be displayed thanks STEADYCONTROL®
Spectrum directly from the card but this software can also used with the other kind of data.

3.3. External Interface

The application is used to collect vibratory data and to perform for rotor or propeller
tuning angles and levels computation. The collected data are stored in the PCMCIA results
card and can be exchange with the PC either directly with a PCMCIA reader.

3.3.1. Input Data

The input data correspond to data needed by the system to start-up and to compute the
signal transformation. They are stored on the PCMCIA data card in short formats in two
different files. The data that are depending from the machine are stored in config.sys while the
parameters dependent from the application are stored in param.sys.
According to the data card, either ROTOR TUNING application or Absorber TUNING
is available. Therefore for each kind of helicopter, there are two corresponding sets of data
(one for Rotor Tuning and the other for absorbers).

These information concern the:

Sensors (name, sensibility)
Selected language
Record time
Some other information are application and (or) machine dependent:
Tolerated NR variation,
Number of Absorbers and values of the B/Rev for Absorber Tuning.

3.3.2. Results Card Record

The collected and computed data are stored in the PCMCIA results card in order to give a
convenient way to use the data .The storing is automatically done while temporal data
recording. Each record will be stored in a file created in the repository corresponding to the
selected record. Therefore on a same card many records can be made.

The organization in the different files can be decomposed in three zones:

- One zone to store the different information of sensors and flight stage.
- One zone to store temporal data recorded during the flight.
- One “Levels and Angles Zone” corresponding to the computed results extract from
temporal data. The average NR and the date of computing are also stored for each kind
of flight. Each line is composed of 16 bytes, divided in:
- One float (4 bytes) for the Level,
- One float (4 bytes) for the Angle,
- One short (2 bytes) for the identifier of the corresponding flight phase,
- One short (2 bytes) for the identifier of the corresponding input Channel,
- One short (2 bytes) for the identifier of the corresponding window number,
- One short (2 bytes) for the identifier of the corresponding harmonic.
-
The last zone will exist only for Rotor Tuning or Absorber Tuning. The results are not
computed for generic recording.

3.3.3. Performances

This system has been developed for acquisition. Most of the data treatments will be done
after, thanks out-board computer, using the PCMCIA results card. The system must be able to
sample the signals in real time. But there is no constraint concerning Levels and Angles
computation.
The record phase is able to store flight data during 30 seconds on PCMCIA cartridge.
Four different flight stages can be saved for the Main Rotor Tuning. Concerning the Tail
Rotor Tuning, Propeller Tuning or Absorber Tuning, only one flight mode is available. Then
results are displayed and can be redisplaying if needed with specific menus. Three different
sampling rates can be done in order to perform record in order to analyze signals up to
different periodic frequency. The Bands width is up to:
• 625 Hz for most of the records,
• 825 Hz on 6 channels (top rotor included),
• Almost 1250 Hz on 4 channels (top rotor included).

Nevertheless the cut off frequency on each channel are set to 723Hz, except for channel A7
that is set to 1073Hz.

Start-up a connection thanks the HyperTerminal using COM1 (Baud Rate is set to 57600,
no Bit parity, eight data bits, one bit stop, and no flow control). After power-up the
STEADYCONTROL® Application, a Redboot prompt should be available.

Figure 6: COM settings configuration

If an application is already loaded while the application is started just press CTRL+C and the
RedBoot prompt will be available and enter the following line when asked:
Fconfig
False
57600
y

The first time the flash-file system must be initialized with:

fis init –f and valid this with y
Then start-up configuration and scripts must be initialized once with:
fconfig –i
y
false
57600
Now the compressed application image must be downloaded with:
load -r -m xmodem -b 0x01020000
(load RAW using xmodem protocol to (RAM) location 0x01020000 with the menu
“Transfer” and sub-menu “Send File” to download the application.

After successful download program the image into flash with:

fis create -b 0x01020000 -l <length> -e 0x01020000 -r 0x01020000 <application-name>
where <length> is the size of the transferred file in bytes and <application-name>is the name
of the file without the “.bin.gz” extension.

Finally a start-up-script has to be created to load and start the application on

PowerNECS boot. For this use the following command:
fconfig
true
Enter the following values:
>fis load -d <application-name>
>go
[Enter]

[Enter]
The command confirms the update with an Erase and Program of the configuration
flash area.
You just have to verify with the command checksum that the program has been
correctly downloaded with the following command when the RedBoot prompt is displayed:
Cksum –b 0x00020000 –l <length> where length is equal to the same value as
the one used for “fis create”
The given value must be equal to the one given with the software to transfer in CRC.txt.

3.4.2. Sensors installation for rotor tuning

The system is used to measure and analyze the vibratory signals, dedicated to aircraft.
It proposes several functionalities listed in menus and sub-menus that can be selected and
activated by the control command. One of the applications is dedicated to rotor tuning. In
order to specify correctly the system the following configuration has to be installed:

Concerning MAIN rotor:

Up to seven accelerometers (depends on the helicopter) have to be connected from
Channel A1 to A7,
Rotor top obtained either by a magnetic or an optic sensor,

DOCUMENT No TNX 184.AW.026.E02 ISSUE D PAGE 15/57

Four different flight phases are allowed and stored in PCMCIA card at specific
position. The common basis proposed, contains GND for ground, IGE for in ground
effect flight, CRUISE for a flight at usual speed and MCP for maximal continuous
power flight. Nevertheless this can be specified for each type of helicopter.
To characterize the main rotor, measures generally concern the variation of Z pilot, the Y and
Z copilot and X, Y and Z under main rotor.

Figure 8: Sensors installation for X, Y, Z measures.

Concerning TAIL rotor:

One accelerometer have to be connected to Channel 1 (mandatory connection),
The acquisition time is set to twenty seconds (see Chapter concerning the algorithms),
Rotor top obtained either by a magnetic or an optic sensor,
Only one flight mode (corresponding to GND).

This guarantees enough information to solve the different equations to calibrate the helicopter.
The accelerometers position and their number will depend from the helicopter. These
specifications will be given in the Working card.

3.4.3. Sensors installation for absorbers tuning

One of the applications is dedicated to absorbers tuning. In order to specify correctly

the system the following configuration has to be installed:

Seven accelerometers have to be connected from Channel A1 to A7,

Rotor top obtained either by a magnetic sensor,
The most used flight phase is used for recording and stored in PCMCIA card at
specific position.

To characterize the system the installation is composed like this:

Channel A1 for embedded left absorber,
Channel A2 for mass of left absorber,
Channel A3 for embedded right absorber,
Channel A4 for mass of right absorber,
Channel A5 for embedded lateral absorber (if there is) or Z pilot,
Channel A6 for mass of lateral absorber (if there is) or Z copilot,
Channel A7 for Z cabin.

3.4.4. Sensors installation for generic recording

One of the applications is used to make record at different sampling frequency:

• At 1250 Hz up to seven sensors can be connected from Channel A1 to A7.
• At 1650 Hz up to five sensors can be connected from Channel A3 to A7.
• At 2500Hz only three sensors can be connected from A5 to A7.

Channel A7 has a cut-off frequency at 1073Hz. All the others are limited to 723 Hz.
Therefore periodic signals can be analyzed with a Bandwidth up to 625, 825 and 1250Hz.

Then after few seconds of display, it comes back to this sub-menu at level N2.

b) Accelerometers test
The “Accelerometers test” is a function that will test all the accelerometers and check
the signals recorded. The signals are stored in the Generic repository of the Results PCMCIA.
Each time a command is selected, an acquisition is made and values are computed for this
sequence. The acquisition will last for five seconds and will be done for all seven possible
accelerometers. The result of each accelerometer is displayed and if the test failed on a
channel, its number is displayed. This menu is to be used in an informative way.

Figure 34: Available Tests for accelerometers

Four different values can be computed, based on extracted menus:
- The peak value,
- The saturation value,
- Mean corresponding to the voltage leakage,
- The levels (noise and movement detection).
These operations will be realized either with working rotor or not. The Peak test and
Saturation has to be done while Rotor is working (accelerometers will send signal). Mean or
Level can be done whatever the case. In case of Level test: if the rotor is stopped only the
noise detection will be effective, on the contrary both movement detection and noise detection
will be effective).

channel. The peak factor checks if there are random chocks or not. The 3-moment
order characterizes the symmetry of the signal while the 4-moment order characterizes
the signal dispersion.
The saturation: check if the signals reached minimal (0) or maximal (65535)
value during excitation. If one channel is saturated, its number is displayed.
The mean display the voltage leakage on a channel: the Channel Number is
displayed if there is a leak.
Levels will display noise and movement detection on each channel.
Then after few seconds, display comes back to sub-menus at level N3.

c) VIBRATIONS RECORD

The “VIBRATIONS RECORD” records signal emitted by the sensors (up to 7

different sensors plus the rotor top sensor). The acquisition results are stored in the Generic
repository of the Results PCMCIA card. (It concerns only the temporal data and no Angles or
Level computation is made).

g) Tail rotor recording

This function is the main function of the acquisition system in case of tail rotor
calibration. It records the data concerning the accelerometers used to analyze the tail rotor
(only one sensor is needed but you can use up to seven), and the rotor top. Many flights
corresponding to GND stage can be stored in the results card. Meanwhile the algorithm
divided the acquisition sequence in five steps and compute data (signal decomposition in five
harmonics and Level and Angles computation). The five steps are done to see the stability (or
the evolution) of the system during time evolution. Each time an acquisition has been made,
the character 7 is added beneath the flight stage if record succeeds. Otherwise the character
8is added. This kind of display will disappear only if the system is shutdown.

5. Operating Mode

The whole application is managed thanks to menu and sub-menu. The decomposition
in menus corresponds to the decomposition in application (Level N1), functions (Level N2)
and commands selection (Level N3). A control command allows to navigate from one menu
or function to another thanks to the ž or   push buttons and enter or exit the selection thanks
to push buttons 5(Exit) and 6(Enter) (see Figure 4: Control command). On the main
acquisition box, the menu level is displayed thanks to the 4 digits. At last level you just have
to use one of the four top buttons to select and activated the commands with its parameters.
By so doing it will start the function and while a command is running the message WAIT is
displayed on the 4 digits.

Before any acquisition campaigns, you should reset the result card. All the data different
from zero will come from an acquisition. To do so, a function called RESET in DATA CARD
MANAGEMENT (from SYSTEM Configuration menu) is provided as you can see in 4.2.2h)
PCMCIA management.

5.1. Rotor Tuning operating Mode

5.1.1. Acquisition

The acquisition for rotor tuning can be decomposed in two steps that are completely user
transparent. Those two steps are:
- Sampling,
- Algorithm computation.
These two steps will be performed each time the pilot or the user will launch the acquisition.

In order to characterize the main rotor, four different acquisitions types have to be
performed. They correspond to four different types of flight as you can see on Figure 40:
Available Flight stage for Main Rotor Tuning:
- GND Ground flight
- IGE In Ground effect
- CRUISE flight at usual speed
- MCP flight at maximal continuous power.
To characterize a tail rotor or a propeller only one acquisition has to be performed. It
corresponds to the Ground flight: GND.

For each kind of flight, user launches the acquisition and the results are stored in the
PCMCIA results card. To do so, the pilot just has to select in the different menus the Main
rotor data record, the Tail rotor data record or the Propeller Data Record in the ROTOR
TUNING SYSTEM application (see paragraph 4.4.1). At the end of computation, global results
are given: such as RN average and sensors data average (level and angles of first harmonic).
For main rotor tuning, results can be displayed thanks to the MR Levels & Angles X/REV
menus where X goes from 1 to 5 (harmonic). The results will be stored in the PCMCIA card
until a reset of the Results card and shown until a new record tuning or a reset will be done.

Remarks: The acquisition can also be made with the function Vibrations records in
Signal Analysis application (see paragraph 4.3.1Menus). In this last case, there is no Levels or
Angles computation, only temporal data recording.

5.1.2. Operating mode

The following operations have to be performed in order to do Rotor tuning:

• Insert the Data PCMCIA card for Rotor Tuning in the STEADYCONTROL® box in
the lower place (this card must be dedicated to this kind of helicopter),
• Insert the Result card in the upper place,
• Connect the Rotor Top,
• Connect the different accelerometers (placed according to the helicopter type
specification and the type of tuning as shown on the Work Card dedicated to the
helicopter type),
• Connect the control command,
• Start the application. The application must be started after the engine start,
• Enter the SYSTEM Configuration application and reset the result card according to
Management of RES Card menu 4.2.2 h) if needed or in order to have only the data of
the flight stored in the card.
• Check that the rotor is started (the Rotor Top LED must be on). Otherwise during
acquisition the following warning message will be raised and no computation will be
made.

Figure 58: Rotor stopped Error message

• Enter the ROTOR TUNING SYSTEM menu and do the different acquisition during
flight with the Main rotor data record menu.

5.2. Absorbers tuning operating Mode

5.2.1. Acquisition

Like rotor tuning, the acquisition for absorbers tuning can be decomposed in two steps that
are completely user transparent. Those two steps are:
- Sampling,
- Algorithm computation.
These two steps will be performed each time the pilot or the user will launch the acquisition.

In order to characterize the system only one acquisition has to be performed. It

corresponds to the most used flight phase. User launches the acquisition and the results are
stored in the PCMCIA results card. To do so, he just has to select the menu the Absorbers
data record in the ABSORBER TUNING SYSTEM application (see paragraph 4.5). At the end
of computation, global results are given: such as RN average and sensors data average (level
and angles of first harmonic). Results can be displayed thanks to the Absorbers data results
menu. These results concern the first, second third and B/Rev harmonic. They will be stored
in the PCMCIA card until a reset of the Results card and shown until a new record or a reset
will be done.

Remarks: The acquisition can also be made with the function Vibrations records in
Signal Analysis application (see paragraph 4.3.1 Menus). In this last case, there is no Levels
or Angles computation, only temporal data recording.

5.2.2. Operating mode

• Insert the Data PCMCIA card for Absorber Tuning in the STEADYCONTROL® box
in the lower place (this card must be dedicated to this kind of helicopter),
• Insert the Result card in the upper place,
• Connect the Rotor Top,
• Connect the different accelerometers (placed according to the helicopter type
specification as shown on the Work Card dedicated to the helicopter type),
• Connect the control command,
• Start the application. The application must be started after the engine start.
• Enter the SYSTEM CONFIGURATION application and reset the result card according
to Management of RES Card menu 4.2.2 h) if needed or in order to have only the data
of the flight stored in the card.
• Check that the rotor is started (the Rotor Top LED must be on). Otherwise during
acquisition the warning message “Rotor Stopped” will be raised and no computation
will be made. (see Figure 58: Rotor stopped Error message)
• Enter the Absorber TUNING SYSTEM menu and do the acquisition during flight with
the Absorbers data record menu.
