Learning 3.5 The student will investigate and understand relationships among organisms in
Objective aquatic and terrestrial food chains. Key concepts include
a) producer, consumer, decomposer;
Content

b) herbivore, carnivore, omnivore; and

c) predator and prey.

Online First, the students will watch a recorded video that the teacher created for the
Activity online web class in the class discussion section. Teacher will give instructions to
go to the PBSlearningmedia.com site, and once in the website, students will be
told to click “launch” and then “play” to begin. The animated PBS character will
pop up and further give student instructions on what to do. Students will learn
create an ecosystem in Belize, and students do not need to create any special
account to log into the website.

The objective or mission of the game is to “make sure the animals have enough to
eat for 12 days – some eat plants, some eat other animals” as instructed by the
animated PBS character. Students will click on “okay,’ and begin.

Students will be told to add 5 plants from the animals and plants menu picture on
the bottom. Once the students drag the picture into the eco system, the PBS
character will continue to instruct the students to see how healthy the ecosystem
is and once the students accomplish one task, the simulation will move forward to
the next day. Students also gain points. The students can also place animals into
the ecosystem and see if the ecosystem is healthy to sustain life.

Students will see that some of the creatures are gone since other animals ate
them. They will learn to add certain animals to balance the eco system with the
understanding of predator and prey as well as consumers and producers.

After 12 days, the students will see how well they did as points are tallied.
Students can play it over again and change up the number of producers and
consumers in the next simulation. Once students have done it three times, they
Pedagogy

will discuss in the online discussion section with

1. Scores they got
2. What they liked and disliked
3. Three things they learned about the amount of plants or animals needed
to sustain a healthy ecosystem.

Students will also answer/respond to at least one peer.
