1.6 Construction Procedure

1.6.1 Traffic Management

Refer to our specified Traffic Management Plan. All related signage and traffic devices
need to be arranged on site before commencement of work on site.

1.6.2 Transportation (Mobilisation of Plants and Equipment)

During mobilization of plants and equipment, proper traffic management need to be

carried out and control. This is to ensure that the traffic was not affected by the
movement of the mobilization activities. The unloading of plants and equipment shall be
done carefully.

1.6.3 Construction Methodology

General
 Surveyor shall be using proper instrument total station and dumping level to mark on
site which is visible and protected during work construction.
 Pavement construction works shall only be allowed to commence on site upon the
approval and acceptance of the sub-grade layer.
 The Contractor shall counter check again the alignment and all dipping pegs and
confirm the consultant prior to the permanent work.
Work Sequence Flow
 Laying 50mm thick sand base
 Laying 300mm thick crusher run
 Laying 50mm thick Premix Binder course
 Laying 50mm Premix wearing course

Preparation of Formation to Receive Road Pavement

 The preparation of formation shall be carried out only after completion of piped or box
culvert, services, utilities and ducts (if any) or any other drainage work that might
affect the works, unless otherwise agreed by Consultant and such preparation shall be
carried out immediately prior to the laying of the sub-base.
 All the materials for sub base, sand base, crusher run, premix binder and premix
wearing shall be sent to nominated and approve laboratory to conduct necessary
testing and to be comply with technical specification.
 The surface of the formation shall be substantially uniform in density throughout its
entire width and shall conform to the density requirements for compaction. Trial
compaction to be conducted in order to determine the designated degree of compaction
as required with a present of supervision consultant.
 Other utilities crossing the road such as water mains and cables shall be protected
before proceed the road base works.
Sub Base
 The sub base material shall be hard, durable and clean. It shall be granular material
and shall be free from organic material, clay balls, and any other deleterious
substances.
 Compaction of the sub base layer shall be carried out by using vibrating roller.
 Alignment, level and surface regularity will be checked.
 The final surface of granular sub base layer shall be regulated and trimmed by back
pusher to the required level and cross fall within the specified vertical tolerances.
 Field Density Test (FDT) or CBR Test on the subgrade shall be carried out according
to the specification.

Sand Base

 The sand base material shall be hard, durable and clean.

 The sand base will have a thickness of 50 mm across the road.
 It shall be granular material and shall be free from organic material, clay
balls, and any other deleterious substances.
 The materials will be delivered to the site by tipper lorries and spread and
leveled by means of a back pusher for the full width of the pavement.
 The material shall be filled and compacted to the required thickness as
specified in the drawing.

 Compaction of the sub base layer shall be carried out by using vibrating
roller to achieve relative dry density as per specification.
 Alignment, level and surface regularity will be checked in accordance to
Technical Specification.
 The final surface of granular sub base layer shall be regulated and
trimmed by back pusher to the required level and cross fall within the
specified vertical tolerances. Compaction work will be done using roller
compactor.
 Field Density Test (FDT) or CBR Test on the subgrade shall be carried out
according to the specification.

Crusher run

 The crusher run road base to be placed on top of the sub base shall
consisting of crushed aggregates laid in layers of thickness not exceed
more than 300mm and to give more specified total compacted thickness
and width with correct line and levels shown in drawings.
 The material shall be crushed rock of hard durable particles of fragments
of rock crushed to the correct size, ell graded and lie within the following
grading limits specified in the JKR’s specification.
 In addition on top of the crusher run, laid the fine aggregates to fill the
voids before laying the tack coat.
 Care shall be taken to prevent segregation of the material into the coarse
and fine fractions.

Premix binder

 Work shall commence on site upon approval and acceptance of the upper
sub-base layer.
 The surface to receive tack coat and asphaltic concrete binder course
shall be free from all dirt, loose material and standing water, which could
be accomplished by employing broom and air compressor.
 Tack coat of approved bitumen emulsion shall be applied as per
specification on the prepared surface prior to laying asphaltic concrete
binder course.

 The asphaltic concrete binder course shall be plant-mixed with bitumen

content as established in the mix design.
 The approved asphaltic concrete binder course shall be delivered to site
by tipper trucks.
 The tyres of tipper trucks must be free of dirt and mud before allowing it to
travel on the tack coat. Clean the tyres before entering the paving area
could do the cleaning.
 The asphaltic concrete binder course shall be laid with paver or equivalent
in single layer but not more than 50 mm compacted thickness.
 If the laid surface is open-textured, back casting shall be carried out and
the coarse aggregates shall be removed before rolling and compaction.
 At the end of the paving operation, the transverse joint shall be feathered
down. Vertical transverse joint shall be provided for the next operation of
paving. This vertical transverse joint must at the end that was feathered
down to provide a neat and clean joint. This vertical joint is to be protected
from damages by tipper trucks or other machinery.
 Compaction shall be carried out using the specified/equivalent type of
compactors and the rolling pattern shall be as per established during the
trial lay.
 Rolling shall always commence from the lower to the higher side of the
carriageway. The minimum rolling temperature shall be 110 0C.
 Compacted density of binder shall be as per specified in the drawing.
 The surface of the asphaltic concrete binder course shall be finished to the
required lines, levels, grades and dimension as shown on the construction
drawings.
 If requested by consultant, coring samples to be taken to check for
compliance with the specified requirements.
 On completion of laying and compaction, joint survey shall be carried out.
