Duration:2 hrs Max Marks:50

Note: Q1 is compulsory. Attempt any two questions from the remaining three questions.
Q1. Answer the following questions: (10x1=10)
a) What type of stresses are induced in shaft?
b) Define torque transmitted by shaft.
c) When two shafts will have equal strength?
d) Explain heat dissipation in brakes?
e) Define clutch?
f) Establish a formula for mean radius of friction surface in clutch.
g) What are the thermal consideration in brake design?
h) Why it is necessary to dissipate the heat generated when clutches operate?
i) What is a self-energizing brake? When a brake becomes self-locking?
j) What are the materials used for break lining.
Q2. Attempt any two questions from the following: (10 x 2=20)
a) Explain Endurance limit and its effect?
b) Described Goodman and Soderberg criteria?
c) A machine component is subjected to a flexural stress which fluctuates b/w 300 MN/m²
and -150 MN/m². Determine the value of minimum ultimate strength, according to 1.
Goodman relation 2. Soderberg relation
Q3. Attempt any two questions from the following: (10 x 2=20)
a) Write the expressions for cone clutch with suitable diagram.
b) A centrifugal clutch transmitting 20KW at 750 rpm consists of four shoes. The clutch is
to be engaged at 500 rpm The inner radius of the drum is 165mm. The radius of the
centre of gravity of the shoes is 140mm, when the clutch is engaged. The co-efficient of
friction is 0.3, while the permissible pressure on friction lining is 0.1N/mm². Calculate:
1.The mass of each shoe. 2. The dimensions of friction lining.

c) A multiple disc clutch is to be used on machine tools. There are 8 driven discs having an
outside diameter of 75 mm and an inside diameter of 56 mm. The discs are of metal and
run in oily environment. The coefficient of friction may be taken as 0.2 and the safe
pressure as 0.7 N/mm:
a. Determine the axial pressure required.
b. Determine the power that can be transmitted at 600 rpm

Q4. Attempt any two questions from the following: (10 x 2=20)
a) A steel spindle transmits 4KW at 800 r.p.m. The angular deflection should not exceed
0.25º per meter of the spindle. Find the diameter of spindle and the shear stress induced in
the spindle.Take G=84GPa.
b) In a band and block brake, the band is lined with 14 blocks, each of which subtends and
angle of 20 at the drum center. One end of band is attached to the fulcrum of the brake
lever and the other to a pin 150 mm from the fulcrum. Find the force reqired at the end of
the lever 1 meter long from the fulcrum to given a torque of 4 kN-m. The diameter of the
brake drum is 1 meter and the coefficient of friction between the blocks and the drum is
0.25.
c) A simple band brake operates on a drum of 600 mm in diameter that is running at 200
r.p.m. The coefficient of friction is 0.25. The brake band has a contact of 270°, one end is
fastened to a fixed pin and the other end to the brake arm 125 mm from the fixed pin. The
straight brake arm is 750 mm long and placed perpendicular to the diameter that bisects
the angle of contact.
i) What is the pull necessary on the end of the brake arm to stop the wheel if 35 kW is
being absorbed ? What is the direction for this minimum pull ?
ii) What width of steel band of 2.5 mm thick is required for this brake if the maximum
tensile stress is not to exceed 50 MPa ?
