Walking Draglines
Innovation
In collaboration with Siemens, we designed the groundbreaking
D3 (Direct Drive for Draglines) System. The goal in rethinking the
dragline’s entire drive system is to increase productivity, reduce
downtime, reduce maintenance costs and minimize energy
consumption. That’s the kind of innovation our customers expect
from Bucyrus.

Walking Draglines A World Leader

Draglines are the largest single bucket excavators built today Since 1910, over 60 different dragline models have been made,
and Bucyrus has designed and manufactured the world’s with total weights of shipped dragline product exceeding 816
largest. Walking Draglines are a primary excavating tool used million kilograms (1.8 billion pounds). Bucyrus has built well
in many surface mining operations worldwide. These highly over 1100 draglines including the world’s largest at 220 cubic
productive machines operate 24 hours a day, seven days a yards (168.2 cubic meters). Today’s draglines are primarily
week and are able to reach depths of 213 feet (64.92 m) and stripping machines, removing great quantities of material to
have capacities of up to152 cubic yards (116.2 cubic meters.) gain access to underlying coal and mineral deposits. Bucyrus is

Machine Service & Support
From project management to turnkey field assembly, Bucyrus
factory-trained service engineers and specialists are available
throughout the world to provide our customers with the
support necessary for meeting their production requirements.
Our service engineers have the knowledge and experience
to bring a successful result to the most demanding projects.
In addition, they are backed by Bucyrus’ team of product
engineers who have the design-based knowledge not
available from other sources.

Specialized Training
Bucyrus product trainers have years of experience with hands-
on and classroom training. We have the skills to train your
people and implement changes on all aspects of operation,
machine management and maintenance.

8750B/8750R Series
The 8750B and 8750R series of draglines are the next
generation of draglines. These draglines feature powerful AC
Drives with conventional gearing.

AC drive efficiency of 86% vs 74% with DC drives.

Reduced energy consumption provides for reduced

greenhouse gas emission.

AC motors are capable of operating at higher speeds

which increases production opportunity.

AC drive motors are interchangeable in all motions,

which minimizes inventory cost.

AC motors do not use brushes, providing less

maintenance and eliminates carbon dust emissions.

AC draglines require less maintenance downtime which

leads to less frequent chance of safety incidents, higher
availability and reduced maintenance costs.

Optional Features
8750B
AccessDirectTM - Remote Monitoring System
Enables remote troubleshooting and monitoring of the
dragline via the internet or a modem, in real-time, from
anywhere in the world.
Allows instant access to information regarding a
machine’s status and the nature of a fault.
Maintenance personnel can go to the mining machine
prepared to correct rather than analyze a problem.
User friendly troubleshooting with clear step-by-step
instructions.
Adaptable to any mine layout.
Maintenance screens available in various languages.
MIDAS - (Monitoring Interaction Diagnostics Service)
MIDAS is a diagnostic system that is an extension of
the AccessDirectTM remote monitoring system. MIDAS
reports machine operational status and data to the
mine computer.
AccuLoadTM - Load Weight System
AccuLoad is a data analysis system that is an
extension of the AccessDirectTM remote monitoring
system. AccuLoad reports the load weight monitoring
of dragline loads to the mine computer.

8750R
8750D3 (Direct Drive for Draglines)
The D3 system features gearless AC direct drives on hoist
and drag, utilizing a single large low speed AC motor
on each function. Swing and propel functions use same
AC drives with conventional gearing incorporated in the
8750B/8750R series.

D3 is made possible through the use of Siemens’ AFE

(Active Front-End) AC electrical technology. This is a
technology applied by Bucyrus to all new AC driven
machines.

D3 AC drive efficiency of 89% vs 74% with DC drives.

D3 provides for increased productivity and reduces

downtime, maintenance costs and energy consumption.

Bucket filling times are reduced and hoisting, lowering,

and payout speeds are increased.

Increased production is only part of the gain. The owner

realizes ongoing cost savings through the elimination of
hoist/drag gearing and related lubrication systems and
elimination of the hoist/drag DC motors and generators.
The removal of these systems immediately does away with
their maintenance costs and any associated downtime 8750D3
costs.
