I chose to compare The Lord’s Prayer the Psalm 3 scripture. I chose this because I thought it
had a different overall tone than The Lord’s Prayer and I was interested by it. Psalm 3 has both
praising and lament statements. The Lord’s Prayer is mostly all praise to God consistently which
made it interesting to compare them. Psalm 3 starts off more lament how it states that there are
many foes that say God will not help. Then it switches more towards praise saying that God is
the one to lift their spirits and it holy. The rest of the scripture is mostly praise, but it could be
open to interpretation. The Lord’s Prayer is more based on God and his forgiveness and how
you should forgive your foes, while Psalm 3 is more of an uproar towards those foes and seems
to show anger towards them.
The Lord’s Prayer shows a distinctively Christian outlook because it is focusing on some of the
key aspects that Christians typically focus on most. That is God’s kingdom in heaven,
forgiveness, and to be kept from all sins and evil. It doesn’t focus on raw emotion like some of
the other scriptures. Some of the Psalms show a lot of emotion and lament. Lament Psalms
tend to make Christians uncomfortable because of the emotions which means that it is much
easier to praise God instead. It is also a lot more hopeful to use a Psalm that is more focused
on positive values than negative one associated with emotion.
