Dear Parent or Guardians,

Hello and welcome to a new school year!

Let me introduce myself. My name is Maysa Fitzgerald and I am your child’s 6th grade Math teacher. I
was born and raised in Sao Paulo, Brazil. I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration and have
worked for various companies in the corporate world. I also hold a Math 4-8 Certification. I want
happiness and a great future for our children. That’s why I teach. While I am teaching, I am learning
from the children in this classroom that:

One person can make a difference

Everyone can dream big

We can all impact the future of our world

We will be a student for life

Thank you for sharing your child with me this school year!

We will be busy this year. We will be studying how to apply mathematics to problems arising in everyday
life, society, and the workplace. Students will use numbers, operations, proportionality, expressions,
equations, inequalities, data with geometry and graphic representation, to calculate, measure, analyze,
create, develop an economic way of critical thinking and problem solving useful in one’s life as a
knowledgeable consumer and investor. I have prepared many activities to help your child succeed
academically, not only this year but also in the future.

I expect students to be in class on time, with their school planner, notebook and pencil, and be prepared
for the day’s learning activities. When students are absent or tardy, they miss valuable instruction, and
not being prepared wastes important learning time. If your child reaches 3 tardies in a month, I will send
a note to inform you.

I assign homework every day, but it shouldn’t take more than 15-20 minutes to be completed. I want to
assure that your child has the chance to practice and reinforce the skills and knowledge that was taught
during class. Homework information can be found on your child’s planner and on the class website. I
expect students to turn work in on time. If there is a problem, please contact me so I can help your child.
Please remember that homework is a graded assignment. A late homework is considered a late or
missing assignment and will be graded according to district’s policy. Please encourage successful
homework completion.

I will be continually checking on your child’s understanding of the subject material to assess progress.

We will have a minimum of 12 grades per grading cycle.

Formative grades (daily work, homework, quiz, participation)– 40%

Summative grades (tests and projects)-60%

It is imperative that your child has a solid understanding of the lessons taught every day, as math is
cumulative – it builds upon itself and requires knowledge from previous lessons. I will monitor your
child’s understanding of the material at school and ask you to do the same during homework time.
Please encourage your child to come to me for clarification, and/or:

tutoring: Mon-Fri 7:45 – 8:15 room 208

homework center: Mon-Thu 3:45-4:30 library

Please contact me with any concerns that might arise throughout the year.

My conference time is: 4th period 11:00-11:45

I am looking forward to meeting you at the parent teacher conference this Wednesday, August 29th, at
7pm.

We are going to have a great school year!

Sincerely

Maysa Fitzgerald
