Anticipated problems: - some students may have little interest in the topic;
- some students may understand and work less than the others;
Aids: blackboard, video projector, audio files, handouts, power point presentation etc.
Activity 1: A brainstorming activity meant to refresh the students’ memory about the topic (Mark Twain and
“The Adventures of Tom Sawyer”).
The teacher starts off the lesson by asking the following questions about the author:

- What did Aunt Polly ask Tom to do?
- What did Tom really want to do? - When did Ben get tired of painting the fence?
- How long did Tom paint the fence? - Did Tom allow Billy Fisher to paint the fence?
- Who was Ben Rogers? Why?
- What was he doing that day? - What things did Tom have at noon?
- Why was Ben unhappy? - How did he feel?
- How much of Ben’s apple did Tom receive and why? - What did Aunt Polly say to Tom?

Activity 3. Writing and Listening to practice the past tense simple (affirmative and interrogative) of regular
and irregular verbs, order some sentences to write the summary of the fragment and listen to evaluate their
own results.The Ss are asked to fill in with the correct past tense forms and check the correct forms while
listening:
‘Tom!’ There 1…………(be) no reply. ‘Where is he?’ 2……………(say) Aunt Polly.
She 3…………….(go) to the door of the kitchen and 4………… (look) into the garden. ‘TOM!’ she 5
…………(shout) again.

Then the Ss ask the questions to which the underlined words are the answer and order the seven given
sentences to write the summary of the fragment:

Activity 4: Post-Listening Activity (Group-work to improve Ss’ skills of listening for details and
encourage competition and team work)
Each team is asked to write the correct words to complete the fragment bellow:

Activity 5: Quote translation (pair-work) to practice translation from English into Romanian and to express
opinions about them ;
The teacher provides the Ss with three quotes by Mark Twain:
“Work consists of whatever a body is obliged to do and play consists of whatever a body is not obliged to
do.”
“I have found out that there is no surer way to find out whether you like people or hate them than to travel
with them.”
“There comes a time in every boy’s life when he has a desire to go somewhere and dig for a hidden
treasure.”
The Ss will work in pairs to translate them into Romanian. Then the Ss are asked to express their opinions
about the quotations.
Homework: Write a paragraph about the best memory/day of your childhood. (Timing: 2 mins)
