Self-Introduction

Philosophy of Education

What is the purpose of education? Is it merely the process of receiving information or is it

more? In my opinion, it is so much more. To me, the purpose of education is to create an

enlightening environment in which students thrive and cultivate new ideas and strategies for

their future through innovation, communication, previous knowledge, new knowledge, strong

relationships and creativity.

So, what is the role of the teacher in this? Is it simply to relay information to students?

Obviously, it is much more than just a transfer of knowledge from one person to the next. The

role of the teacher, in my opinion, is to facilitate an encouraging and enlightening classroom

where students are excited and anxious to learn; to establish and encourage strong relationships

between students and educators; to create an environment to learn how to think outside of the

box.

But does the role of the educator stop in the classroom? What about community

involvement? Community involvement is a key factor in being the best educator that one can be.

It is important to keep the community involved in what is happening at the school. My parents

always told me, “It takes a village.” This is true now more than ever. These days, especially

with funding for education being scarce, the community are the people who support the

classrooms through volunteers, donations, grants, and more. Without the community support, it

would be very hard to bring new technology and innovations into the hands of students and in

this world of exponential technological growth, technology and innovation is a must.

What about the role of the student? What is the students roll when it comes to education?

To me, the role of the student is to develop into well-rounded, cultured, and educated individuals

that are capable of making responsible decisions for the future. Their role is to think openly and

outside the box. Also, to learn the difference between right and wrong and to build upon what

they have learned and pass it on.

In conclusion, in my opinion, the purpose of education is to be enlightened through

knowledge and open thought. The purpose is to create an environment where individuals can

thrive and become wiser, smarter, and discover their individual values so that they may make a

better future for themselves as well as others. Children are our future and education is here to

guide them on their path.

Classroom Layout

The simplistic design of my classroom layout serves the purpose of facilitating free and

open taught in the classroom. Considering that my content area is Earth and space science, my
5
MANAGEMENT PLAN
students will need plenty of room for research and testing. Starting from the top right-hand

corner flowing diagonally from the storage unit to the classroom entry, I designed my classroom

as follows.

The storage container in the upper right corner is placed in an open space where students

can easily access the materials and equipment that they need to work on their labs and

assignments. On The wall behind the teacher’s desk is a SmartBoard in the center with a white

board on either side to help the teacher with engaging the classroom. Directly in front of the

SmartBoard is the teachers desk/station. Here you will find a laboratory style desk with a sink

attached to the right side for students to be able to wash their hands or wash their eyes in case of

an emergency. This station is in the center portion of the room so that a view of the entire

classroom can be had by the teacher always. In the center of the room, set up in a U-like shape

with six units in the center, Are the student desk/lab stations. Here the students will say two to a

table with all students being able to focus their attention towards the front as nobody will have

their backs facing towards the front of the room. The setup of the desks also allows for free

movement around the classroom, not only for the teacher, but for the students as well. All the

tables are set up to have approximately 3 feet in front and behind them for easy access and

movement around the room as the students will be working in groups a lot and moving around

the room to share ideas and communicate with each other. In front of the back row of desks,

hanging from the ceiling, is the projector. This has been positioned here for nominal use with the

SmartBoard. In the bottom right-hand corner or two sets of shelves the shelves can be used for

additional storage of materials or to keep references on for the students to access to help them

with their research. Finally, at the bottom left-hand corner of the diagram, is the entry to the

classroom. There is a very specific reason for having the location of the teacher’s desk where it
6
MANAGEMENT PLAN
is as compared to the entry of the room. This is so that the teacher may see, at any time whether

at the desk or moving about the room helping students, anyone who enters or exits the room.

There are a few things that this diagram does not show. In the upper left-hand corner would be a

laptop storage and power container with an inventory of 40 laptops for student use. Also, there

would be various educational posters and so forth hanging from the walls that will help aid

students in retaining information as anything on the wall will pertain to what has been learned in

class.

Classroom Procedures

General Procedures

A. Beginning of period-At the beginning of the period, students will go to their assigned

seats, take out their required materials for the period, and start completing their bell-work.

1. Attendance check-While bell-work is being completed, I will take attendance based

on assigned seats.

2. Previously absent students-Previously absent students will report to me to see if

there are any materials they need from the day they were absent. If they have

questions, they can see me after class, during lunch, or email me.

3. Tardy students-Students who are tardy will discretely enter the classroom, without

causing a disruption to other students, sit in his/her seat, get out their materials, and

catch-up with the rest of the class.

4. Expected student behavior-Students will maintain “do unto others as you would

have them do unto you” attitude while in class. Everyone will maintain a respectful

and helpful attitude. They will stay focused on tasks given without over socialization,

and they will not use smartphones unless needed for class assignment.
7
MANAGEMENT PLAN
B. Out-of-room policies-While representing the school when outside of the classroom

(sports games, extracurricular activities, field trips, etc.) students will observe the same expected

student behavior as in the classroom. Students will maintain “do unto others as you would have

them do unto you” attitude while representing the school outside of the classroom. Everyone

will maintain a respectful and helpful attitude.

C. Materials and equipment-Students will be expected to have 1 folder, 1 notebook of

college rule paper, 1 thumb drive, and 1 pencil every day in class. Students will use their

computers and other electronics during specified lessons.

1. What to bring to class-Students will bring required materials (1 folder, 1 notebook, 1

thumb drive, and 1 pencil) to class every class period.

2. Pencil sharpener-Students may use the pencil sharpener discretely if needed.

3. Safety equipment-Students will always use safety goggles whenever conducting any

experiment or testing. Gloves will always be used when handling any chemical.

4. Room equipment-Students will treat all classroom equipment and materials with care

and respect. These items are expensive and students are lucky to have them. They

will be treated as such or they will not be available for student use.

5. Student contact with teacher’s desk, storage, other materials-Students will not

take any materials off the teacher’s desk, out of the storage closet, or other classroom

materials unless otherwise instructed to by the teacher.

D. Ending the period-Students will have 5 minutes at the end of the class period to clean

their lab station, pack up their things and put classroom materials away. If completed early,

students will sit at their station and wait to be excused. (The bell does not excuse you. I do.)

MANAGEMENT PLAN
Lecture and Lab Procedures

A. Student attention-Students will give respect and full attention to instruction and others

who are presenting. Students will show the same respect to others when discussing anything in

class and/or working in groups. This goes back to the “do unto others…” policy stated earlier.

B. Student participation-Students will equally participate in class discussion, group work,

instruction and labs. Accommodations can be made for those with a 504 plan or IEP.

C. Seat-work procedures-Students will work quietly with table partner when working on

class assignments in their seat.

1. Talk among students-Students may discuss classwork among each other

when working at their table about their assignment. Once students are done with their

classwork, they can choose to talk with their table partner if they are also done with

classwork.

2. Obtaining help-Students may raise their hands for help and I will come

to help as soon as possible. Student fill refrain from doing so in the middle of a lecture

or presentation unless absolutely necessary.

3. Out of seat-Students may move about the room to grab any equipment,

materials, tools, etc., if it is not excessive and not disturbing others from their work.

Student Group Work and Labs

A. Use of materials and supplies-Students will come prepared to class with their

contributing materials and supplies. If a student is unable to have the materials ready, for

reasons outside of their control, they can discuss this with me and I will assist and/or
9
MANAGEMENT PLAN
accommodate them. All equipment and materials will be treated with the upmost care and

respect.

B. Assignment of students to groups-If students will be working in groups larger than just

with their table partner, groups will be assigned by table at random by the teacher.

C. Student participation and behavior- Students will equally participate in class

discussion, group work, instruction and labs. Accommodations can be made for those with a 504

plan or IEP. Students will maintain respectful and open attitudes and will share the

responsibility of all work equally.

Miscellaneous

A. Signals-When I play the “guitar riff” students will respond by stopping whatever they

are doing, become silent, and give me their full undivided attention.

B. Behavior during interruptions-When another teacher or administrator comes into

classroom or if announcements come on, students will show the same respect as with any

other person or presentation in the class. Students will give their undivided attention and

remain on task.

C. Special equipment-Students will treat special equipment the same as they would any

usual equipment in the classroom, with the utmost care and respect. Any special equipment

used must be tracked by signing the equipment out before use and signed back in after use.

D. Fire and disaster drills-Students will be given a copy of fire dill, disaster drill,

emergency and lockdown procedures on the 1st day of class. Students will strictly follow

these procedures calmly and in an orderly fashion.,

E. Lunch periods-Students will show the same respect to others during lunch periods as

they would be expected to do in class. Students will come back from lunch in an orderly
10
MANAGEMENT PLAN
fashion and prepared for class. Personal items may be left in the classroom at the owner’s

risk. The teacher is not responsible for any lost, stolen, or damaged items.

F. Physical Injury/Medical Emergency-In the case of a physical injury or medical

emergency, students will remain, or go to, their seats (unless instructed otherwise by the

teacher) and remain calm and orderly until help arrives.
