Project Summary

The EMJMD Euroculture: Society, Politics and Culture in a Global Context (120 ECTS) is a deeply integrated
innovative, interdisciplinary and truly joint programme, leading to a joint degree. In an integrated approach,
implemented at all partner universities, Euroculture studies the origins and impact of social, cultural and religious
dispositions, conflicts and exchange in and on today’s multi-cultural societies in Europe. Instead of focusing on
European institutions and structures, it takes the citizen perspective as point of departure. Europeanization was
once interpreted as leading to more unity, ‘an ever closer union’. Yet now we see that multiple Europes have
come into existence, or perhaps, put it differently, a diffracted Europe. It is the aim of this master programme to
understand how these different perspectives on Europe and the EU have developed and what they imply for the
social stability and societal integration. The central theme of a multiplicity Europe is hotly debated, concerning
both national and international policy making. The conditions under which Europe is studied, have been
experiencing rapid changes: in a very short period of time the playing field has been overhauled as a result of a
now seriously contested European integration process, the rise of populism in Europe and beyond, the financial
crisis of 2008 and its aftermath, the refugee crisis, drawbacks of globalisation and xenophobia. Two events that
took place in 2016, the result of the referendum on ‘Brexit’ in the UK, and the election of D.J. Trump as president
of the United States attest to the influence of these developments. The narrative and rhetoric (facts are no longer
taken for granted, but can be challenged and replaced by ‘alternative facts’) have changed fundamentally as have
the means of communication (role of Facebook, use of algorithms for news selection, application of tweets for
strategic policymaking). The mobility in the EMJMD is based on the challenging ‘web model’ (students can start at
any EU partner university and continue their studies at another EU partner) and embodies the values of
student-centred and active learning. Operating with one student body, it makes full use of the academic strengths
and geographical positions of its individual partners. The programme structure creates excellent opportunities for
students to choose their own path, forming their own academic and professional profile. It runs a research and a
professional track, involving respectively a substantial professional placement or an intensive research
secondment, both offered in close cooperation with non-academic partners. This results in deepening work-based
learning through theme focused placements and creativity, initiative and an enterprising mind-set developed in
the secondments. All students are provided with a state-of-the-art toolbox of skills and competences to fuel
success in obtaining employment and be an active citizen.
