METHODOLOGY
The Glengariff Group, Inc. conducted a live operator telephone survey of likely August 2018 Republican Primary voters. The 400
sample survey has a margin of error of +/-4.9% with a 95% level of confidence. 80% of respondents were contacted by landline
telephone. 20% of respondents were contacted by cell phone telephone. Data was collected from April 19-21, 2018. This survey
was commissioned by the Greater Detroit Regional Chamber PAC.
NOTE: THIS SURVEY REPORT IS AN ABBREVIATED SURVEY REPORT. QUESTIONS 12-21 WHICH FOLLOW THE
POLITICAL QUESTIONS HAVE BEEN WITHHELD FOR RELEASE. THESE QUESTIONS WHICH DO NOT APPLY TO THE
POLITICAL RACE WILL BE RELEASED IN THEIR ENTIRELY PRIOR TO THE MACKINAC CONFERENCE.

KEY FINDINGS
• 82.3% of Republican primary have a favorable impression of Donald Trump. 9.5% of primary voters have an unfavorable
opinion. 7.8% of primary voters have no opinion on Donald Trump.
• 50.3% of Republican primary voters view themselves as more supporters of Donald Trump than the Republican Party. 39.0%
of primary voters view themselves as more supporters of the Republican Party than Donald Trump.
▪ Among ‘Trump Republicans’, Donald Trump is viewed favorably by 96.5% and unfavorably by 0.5%.
▪ Among ‘GOP Republicans’, Donald Trump is viewed favorably by 62.2% and unfavorably by 22.4%.
• By a margin of 87.8%-8.1%, Republican primary voters approve of the performance of President Donald Trump.
• Among ‘definite’ primary voters, 68.1% strongly approve of the President’s performance and 19.8% somewhat approve of the
President’s performance. Among ‘probable’ primary voters 45.1% strongly approve of the President while 42.2% somewhat
approve.
• Among primary voters who consider themselves more supporters of Donald Trump than the Republican Party, 83.6%
STRONGLY approve of the President’s performance. But among primary voters who consider themselves more supporters of
the Republican Party than Donald Trump, only 33.3% strongly approve of the President’s performance, while 39.7%
somewhat approve.

• The sharpest difference among Republican views of President Trump’s performance appears to be the respondent’s primary
source of political news. If the Republican voters gets their news from Fox News or Talk Radio, there is full approval of the
President’s performance. If the Republican voter gets their news from other tv networks, local television news or newspapers,
there is considerably less intensity towards the President’s performance. The chart below compares strength of job approval
based on the respondent’s sources of political news.

• Republican primary voters were asked who they support in the Republican primary for Governor:
• Among the 74.5% of respondents who said they were definitely voting:
• Bill Schuette leads Brian Calley 37.4%-23.6% in out-state Michigan. Bill Schuette leads Brian Calley 34.6%-22.0% in Metro
Detroit.
• Among ‘Trump Republicans’, Bill Schuette leads Brian Calley by a margin of 33.9%-22.9%. Among ‘GOP Republicans’,
Bill Schuette leads Brian Calley by a margin of 38.5%-23.5%
▪ Schuette leads Calley among ‘conservative’ voters by a margin of 35.4%-22.9%. Schuette leads Calley among
‘moderate’ voters by a margin of 38.9%-24.7%.
• Among men, Schuette leads Calley 39.2%-29.9%. Among women, Schuette leads Calley 33.2%-15.8%.

• One of the largest differences in the race is based on where the respondents gets their primary political news. Among voters
who get their primary political news from Fox News, Bill Schuette holds a nearly 29-point lead. Among all other news
sources, the race breaks nearly even.
