Course/Discipline: Math II
Central Focus of the Unit: This unit focuses on different parent functions and different
transformations of those functions. These transformations include shifting the graph left, right,
up, and down, scaling the graph by both positive and negative factors, and any combination of
the above.

Foody Functions
Directions: Students will use common food items (or other items found around the house) to
graph different parent functions and transformations of those functions. You will use 3 different
food items to create 3 different graphs (3 parent functions and 3 transformations based off of
those parent functions). For each function, use at least 2 different kinds of transformations.
Each parent function and transformation should be made from the same food item, and on the
same graph. Label both the parent and transformation functions on the graph. Under the graph,
you will identify the graph behaviors including: domain, range, max, min, end behaviors
approaching positive and negative infinity, and any symmetry found in your transformation
graph. You will bring these projects into class to turn them in.
Example: Use uncooked spaghetti to graph the parent function y=x, and also use uncooked
spaghetti to graph the transformation function y=-x+2 on the same graph. Then, identify the
domain, range, max, min, end behaviors approaching positive and negative infinity, and any
symmetry found in your new graph, y=-x+2.
