issues in the current medical field and realized that the

employee’s and the patient’s family drastically. I want to

bring this to people’s attention because everyone has the

About the interview
I conducted an interview with a nurse within the
healthcare field and wanted to know her personal feelings
on what she thought the biggest problems were in the
hospitals. I wanted to know the issues from someone who
experiences them first hand and find out her input on what
and how to make a change. I wanted to get this info out
into the public to hopefully make a change. I think making
people more aware; will motivate them to go to the
people who can actually make the change.

Nursing Interview
Samm’s Mag-
With you being a nurse, what are the top three biggest issues that you think
need to be changed in the healthcare field?

Susan-
It all falls under improving healthcare: proper staffing of medical personnel,
making insurance and medical care affordable, and focus on preventative
care.

Samm’s Mag-
Who do you think is responsible for making these changes (staff, management, CEO, etc.)?

Susan-
Local, state and federal governments, leaders in healthcare, the medical personnel, but mostly the public needs to weigh in on all
the decisions and made aware of how the changes may affect taxes, wages, insurance premiums, and medical costs.

Samm’s Mag-
What do you think would be the best solutions to these issues?

Susan-
All the players of the above-mentioned groups need to work together to reduce costs, maintain safe staffing, and create an
environment of preventative healthcare.

Samm’s Mag-
What are the risk factors that came along with these issues if they are not resolved?

Susan-
It is my opinion that as facilities and clinics reduces medical staffing while increasing the workload, medical staffing will leave the
workforce. This will result in poor medical care, poor preventive care, and an increase in medical costs for the public.

Samm’s Mag-
What are some of the causes of these issues?

Susan-
The high cost of healthcare has caused a whittling down of staff at medical facilities to reduce the cost of care. Understaffed and
overworked medical personnel are making mistakes. They are also leaving the medical workforce by retiring or leaving the medical
field due to unsatisfactory conditions. They contradict each other. This will result in poor healthcare for all, with less understanding of
the public to care for themselves.

Samm’s Mag-
As a nurse what are the most difficult parts of your job?

Susan-
The most difficult part of my job is workplace burnout due to understaffing and increased workload.

Samm’s Mag-
What could the company do to make those situations easier on you and your other fellow nurses?

Susan-
This is the question of the century. A happy medium must be found to please everyone, which means providing healthcare at a
reasonable cost for everyone without compromising the mental and physical health of the healthcare providers.

Samm’s Mag-
Do you think that nurses receive enough on-the-job training to handle stressful situations? Why or why not?
JUARY 2006
Susan- S M T W T F S
There was not any training at all regarding workplace burnout, understaffing, or increased workload. I have a feeling that it is not
discussed because perhaps the nurses would be discouraged. I also think that it may encourage

I know that nurses are do research regarding improving workplace burnout, understaffing issues (which can be different for each
environment) and increased work load.

Susan-
There is a shortage due to nurses aging out or retiring and new nurses are burning out and are either leaving patient care or
leaving the nursing profession all together.
