Chapter on the Reasons for an Ism to be Jarr

An ism will be ‫ جمرور‬for the following reasons:

1. Harf of Jarr
a. Meanings of the harf of jarr that we didn’t cover in Access 1 as they are
not in the Quran.
َّ‫ ُرب‬: means perhaps, maybe, sometimes. However it does indicate ‫تقليل‬
(less). “Sometimes, but not most of the time”. It can be used literally or
figuratively. َّ‫ ُرب‬cannot be attached to a pronoun, it can only be used
with an ‫اسمَّظاهر‬. Hadith example: http://sunnah.com/urn/1302380

َّ ‫َّر‬
‫ب‬ ُ َّ‫واو‬: Put the letter ‫ و‬in front of the word َّ‫ َرب‬for an oath. Eg:
ُ َ َ ُ َ ُ َ
‫يمََّّلقيتُ َّه‬
ٍ ِ ‫ وَّربََّّرج ٍل‬I swear there are very few honorable mean that I have
‫ر‬‫َّك‬
met.

ُ ْ ُ َ ُ َ
َّ‫ مذ‬Since eg: ‫َّمذََّّيُومِ ََّّاخلميس‬ ‫ ماَّرأتك‬I haven’t seen him since Thursday.

ُ ُ ُ ‫ َد َر‬I studied during the day.

َّ‫منذ‬: During eg: َِّ‫ستََّّمنذَّالصباح‬

2. Idafah
a. Idafah can be used to show possession (‫ )بتقديرَّالم‬eg: ‫يد‬ َ ‫قَلَ ُم‬
ٍَّ ‫َّز‬
b. Idafah can be used to show what something is made of (‫ )بتقديرَّ ِمن‬eg:
َّ‫َّحديد‬
ٍ ‫خاتم‬
c. (not in the Ajroomiyyah) used to show “in/during” (‫ )بتقديرَّيف‬eg from the
ْ َ َْ
َ ‫ك ُرَّالليْل‬
َِّ ‫َّوانل َه‬
