INTRODUCTION

The term entrepreneur originates from the French word ‘entreprendre’ which means to do
something’ (swedberg, 2000) or ‘to undertake’ the risk of new ventures (kuratko & Hodgetts, 2001). It was
first introduced by Richard Cantillon, an Irish banker in Paris, through hiss essay ‘Essai sur la nature du
commerce’ (1755). To cantillon entrepreneurs are economic agents who have the foresight and willingness
to take advantage of realized and unrealized profit opportunities through buying and selling activities
(Blaug, 2000). It is the entrepreneur who acts as the middleman to buy at a low price and sell at a higher
price.

Then Adam Smith (1776) widens the scope of entrepreneurship to include the task of forming an
organization for commercial purposes. He described the dynamism of the personality of an ‘entrepriser’
such as the ability to foresee potential thereby created. This idea was further expanded by Jean Babtiste
Say (1803) who saw entrepreneurs as individuals with certain competencies, who can influence society by
forming enterprises and likewise were influenced by society to recognized needs and fullfill them through
skillful management of resources.

Entrepreneur were in the limelight too; cases were analysed for model to be emulated. The
turbulent yeaars of the second half of the 1990s drew cynicism and critique of the region’s so-called bubble
economies. Government policies and strategies were criticised and scrutinised for lesson to be unlearnt.
And once again, entrepreneurs stole the show, albeit fo the wrong reason.

Laslty, entrepreneurs is more of the person careerr in business. Entrepreneur can be developed
himself for making growth his business to more familiar and famous. Then entrepreneurship is one
activities selling something to someone who called customed by a good product quality, the quantities of
product and others.

B. ENTREPRENEUR BACKGROUND

NAME, AGE, GENDER, ETHNICITY AND ORIGIN

Encik Ismail Bin Haji Hassan was a teacher but in a mean time he was a entrepreneur of drinking
water. He was 36 years old. Was born at Hospital Kota Bharu on 2 August 1980. On his secondary school
was at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Ismail Petra then he continue his study at University Utara
Malaysia in a human resource. He was involves in business since his at the university but already interest
in business since he was child. This because his mother take contract at university (UiTM) café for selling
food. So from that, encik Hassan like to help his mother during his mother trade. From that, arise interest
on his self in business.

HOW HE START THE BUSINESS

At university, he was active with small business such as rent a car for student, rent a bust for
student back to his village, selling clothes and others. From the business that he do during at university, he
can get income to survive his life at university. But in his study in human resource, he already been study
about account, strategy marketing, recruit, and others. So from this, he can make their business to other
level. Actually that can gives advantages on their business.

After grade in 2003, he move to involves with MARA in about nine month. In MARA he still learn
about business. After grade with MARA, he making a own company with takeover. Then he said to making
own company is too hard because of the bigger capital needed. To takeover the company, encik Ismail just
need RM2500 but he still paid monthly for the company. The name of the company is Nanie’s marketing
Sdn Bhd involves in drinking water industry. But in Mac 2016, the company has change the name to
Koperasi Nanie’s Niaga Kelantan Bhd. The changes of the name company one of the changing of encik
Ismail doing.

THE FACTOR LEAD THE CREATION OF BUSINESS

He start the business with takeover the company with RM2500 for his drinking water company. For
the early business, he doesn’t have any special transport for his product. And doing the business with
distributor style. After that, encik Ismail move more higher, he make the drinking water variant. Means the
drinking water can separates to student, pregnant women, and society. Other than, the bottle of the
drinking water is design with creativity design. Every single of the drinking water by his company is fill with
zam zam water. That one of the strategy for encik Ismail. The target for his business not in grocery store
but more focus on school, office, and cooperative in Kelantan, Terengganu and Pahang.

Sometimes encik Ismail will offered to many event such as school activity, wedding ceremony and
othet activity. So from this style of business, the product of encik Ismail can more growth and familiar in
society. Then he move step by step for making his business more successfully.

Encik Ismail involves in business because of interesting about the business. Other because of family
background. All his sibling involves in business because his father want they take part. So this is the reason
why encik Ismail more likely to creation business. Then his family have told him, in business have three
things is more valuable. First is business in food, secondly is business in education and lastly business in
healthy. Now, Nanie’s drinking has been more stable and successful. Though in early starting with a small
business and now he have their own factory for drinking water. Encik Ismail have their own vision in his
business, one is be a familiar company in drinking water in Kelantan compliant Islam for healthy. Hopefully
his can achive his vision.

Finally, encik Ismail tell students nowadays more likely to passed in study, but for him more to
interesting. So from his statement, we can take something positive for ourself. Then he was tell about food,
as muslims we should take the halal food and seriously in doing business.

COMPANY BACKGROUND

NAME OF COMPANY

Koperasi Nanie’s Niaga Kelantan Berhad is a company that has been developing since 2004. The
company is headed by a young man from Kelantan. Encik Ismail bin Hassan. On such matter as he
adheres to the principle, if you want to do business should be dealing in three types of industry, namely in
the food and beverage industry, education as trade books and finally is health. At the beginning of
business, the company named Nanie's Marketing, but in March 2016 the company name has been change
to the Koperasi Nanie’s Niaga Kelantan Berhad because of specific reason.

TYPES OF BUSINESS AND INDUSTRY

He opened a company-based industry drinks, namely mineral water.The main product of the
company is mineral water. However, the mineral water produced by the company Koperasi Nanie’s Niaga
Kelantan Berhad has a special taste for having mixed with the water Zam Zam with certain ratios. Each
company has their target customers. Koperasi Nanie’s Niaga Kelantan Berhad have selected offices,
schools and cooperative as a place in selling their products.

TARGET CUSTOMERS

As the head of Koperasi Nanie’s Niaga Kelantan Berhad, Encik Ismail bin Hassan did not want to
enter the retail market. In an effort to expand the business, Koperasi Nanie’s Niaga Kelantan Berhad had
also successfully entered the market of East Coast States, namely Pahang and Terengganu.

At the first stage of their business, their company has no vehicles for delivery to the customer.
Therefore, they have invited customers who wish to obtain mineral water produced by the company
Koperasi Nanie’s Niaga Kelantan berhad. Due to many requests from customers, Mr Ismail bin Hassan
bought a factory to multiply the quantity of mineral water produced in short time. After that, he did buy a
truck. The truck is intended to carry out delivery of mineral water. With the availability of trucks and the
plant, the company's business Koperasi Nanie’s Niaga Kelantan Berhad is growing to get requests from
other states near the Kelantan. Koperasi Nanie’s Niaga Kelantan Berhad was in a market in the state of
Pahang and Terengganu with supply water of syifa '. Syifa ' water is mineral water which has been recited
verses of the Holy Quran. During the process of reading the verses of the Holy Quran, Tok Guru and Ustaz
has called to produce Syifa ' water. After that, packaging process begin where the water bottled water.

HOW HE RUN THE BUSINESS

Today, the company is headed by Mr. Ismail bin Hassan, namely Koperasi Nanie’s Niaga Kelantan
Berhad was successfully secured a place in the hearts of the local community. The locals start making
bookings for weddings and other occasions. As a company that have high creativity, the company's
Koperasi Nanie Niaga Kelantan Berhad has made special labels to be used as gifts in weddings. The label
produced is able to attract anyone who sees it. Koperasi Nanie’s Niaga Kelantan Berhad has also diversify
the mineral water color. In addition to the water, drinking can also can be used as a decoration because it
has an attractive color.

Koperasi Nanie’s Niaga Kelantan Berhad has a total of 13 people of labor and has 2 shift which is
day and night. In addition, the company Koperasi Nanie’s Niaga Kelantan Berhad be willing to accept
community wishing to work part time in the factory. For example, students who have completed SPM,
STPM or those individuals who are looking for more money. The purpose of the leading company for
Koperasi Nanie’s Niaga Kelantan Berhad, Mr. Ismail bin Hassan making like that is to assist local
communities in search of sustenance because for him if we open the door to other individuals sustenance,
Allah SWT will open the doors of subsistence instead.

C. THE ENTREPRENEUR BEFORE STARTING THE VENTURE

WORKING EXPERIENCE

His work experience before becoming an entrepreneur is that he was educated in the business world
since he was six years old. He used to follow her mother while she running her business. His mother
worked as a tender owner in the school cafeteria and now working in the Universiti Teknologi Mara (UITM)
cafe.

While Mr Ismail bin Hassan further his studies at Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM), he also has
experience in the business. He added revenue through the business to cover his expenses while studying.
One of the business conducted is selling clothes that have anything that represent Kelantan. The clothes
must be purchased by all new students from Kelantan. This show differences between students from
Kelantan and other states. In addition to that, he is also a distributor of ‘Nasi Kerabu Air’ to UUM students.
In addition to make ‘Nasi Kerabu Air’, he also makes the car rental service and bus service to send UUM
students to their hometown. He started from semester three to semester seven with a profit of RM2000 per
sem. His profit was estimated at RM60 per day. In business, he was helped by his friends. Work
experience shall begin from the bottom. He said if we want to do business, we must start from the bottom.

ROLE MODEL

Mr. Ismail bin Hassan is an successful entrepreneur of Nanie's Drinking Water in his own state,
Kelantan. His business only focus on drinking water. His business is located in Kota Bharu, Kelantan. He
runs the business since he was in his 30s. Since childhood, he had been educated by his parents in the
business field.

His mother is a tender owner at education institute while his father is a bureau of the polity (prison
officers). In spite of his success, her parents are the role model for him. His parents give a lot of
encouragement and support him in the conduct of his business. Despite working as a teacher, he also runs
his own business to increase revenue and take a chance in the business world. He used the experience
that he got while he still studying at university.

Apart from his parents, his siblings also play a big role in going into business. His siblings gave him a
lot of motivation and enthusiasm until he managed to open his own company. His siblings also involved
with various types of businesses.

ENTREPRENEURS ACTIVITIES

Mr Ismail bin Hassan’s company is Nanie's Marketing Corporation Kelantan Berhad. It is a company
that sells drinking water and have thirteen workers. The workers are split into two shifts which are day shift
and night shift. This company also have part-time workers for SPM graduated that divided into four workers
for day shift and four workers for night shift.

His business activities is distributing drinking water to schools and offices throughout the state. He also
distribute al-syifa water but this type of water is more focused in Terengganu and Pahang. Al-syifa water is
water reading verses in the Quran and were recited by religious teachers of religious schools.

In addition, there are other products (marriage) is a water-based beverage packaging but different
from the usual packaging. The products are smaller and easy to carry to serve as door gift for weddings.
Water that used in the purchased are also type of pH7. Each bottle of water sold plus creativity using ‘zam-
zam’ water.

Whenever the month of Ramadhan, he made a water contribution program to mosques throughout the
states. In addition, water is also distributed to a ‘Sekolah Pondok’, ‘Tahfiz’ and orphanage. In the rainy
season, he also distribute drinking water to the flood victims in the Pasir Mas and Tumpat. Every programs
is held in collaboration with other parties, which is other people sponsor while his company only distributes.
Business is conducted through social sites and more on words of mouth.

INTENTION OF BEING AN ENTREPRENEUR (at what age)

En Ismail bin Hassan grew up and lived in the Kampung Kijang, Kota Bharu, Kelantan since childhood.
He starts to get involved in the business since he was a kid. He was influenced by his parents' business. At
the age of six, he followed her mother to run her business in a school cafeteria. His parents often reveal to
him about the importance of business.

During his life in the 20s, he has begun to do business while still studying at UUM. Business that he
runs while studying is to sell clothes that represent Kelantan, ‘Nasi Kerabu Air’, car rent service and bus
service for students that want to back to their hometown. From there, he has got the desire to continue to
do business. From which he earned in business UUM, he can add more income to support his studies.

In the early 30s, he opened his own company named Nanie’s Marketing . In early March 2016, the
company changed its name to Nanie's Marketing Corporation Kelantan Berhad. The company sells an
Islamic-based drinking water.

PARENT’S BACKGROUND

Mr. Ismail Bin Hassan is an entrepreneur come from Kampung Kijang, Kota Bahru, Kelantan. He was raised and
educated by his parents in the village. Since childhood, he has been exposed by his parents about the business. In
addition, he also often by her mother out of dealing in the school cafeteria.

His mother was a trader at a school canteen and cafe Uitm. His mother named is Ramlah binti Abdul Rahman. His
mother has now reached the age of 67 years. In addition, her mother used to do business in the cafe of the education
agency retired and became a full-time homemaker. His mother often gave him exposure and motivation to remain
successful in the business.

His father of these entrepreneurs named Hj Hassan Bin Yaacob was retired from goverment service. His father had
served as an officer of Biro Tatanegaara as a Pegawai Penjara and now terminated his service on the age factor. His
father is now 74 years old. In addition to his mother, his father is also a mainstay in his business.

D. THE ENTREPRENEUR AT THE TIME HE STARTED THE VENTURE

PRIMARY MOTIVATIONS

In running his business, Encik Ismail got motivation to start up and strengthen his business. It is
a primary motivation to him to running his business until now. Before his start up the business, his family
told him to find a permanent business to be made as a regular business. His parents also have a
background as aentrepreneur. So they have experience as a entrepreneur to share with their son. His
parents told him permanent business may be can be as a regular business. For example business in food
and drink like restaurant or drinking water will last long in business. This is because, people will still find
the shops sell food and drinks because it is something that important and needs in life. Seconds, business
in educations. He told business in educations is a last long business. Entreperneurs in educations is like
selling books and stationary to peoples. Become a supplier to bookstore is also business in education.
This business also guarantee last long because people need the equipment in learning. People will find
stationary shop buy the items. Lastly, his parents told him the business will guarantee last long is health
business. His said, anyone will find a cure to treat a pain. People will find health product for their health.
Now many entrepneurs involved in running the business based on health. For example, health product
likes Terlajak Laris, Almas, and others get a place in society for health product. Beside go to hospital or
clinic, people also will find a shop of health product for themselves. So this business will last along in this
field. Message given by his family especially his parents, had made him motivations to open his own
business. Encik Ismail was involved business based on drinking water. Besides that, the main motivation
for him to start up his business is his own family. His parents especially is his main motivation for him to
start up the business. All his siblings also involved in business as their hobby. His role model in business
is his own parents. Lastly, his motivations is his experiences when his in a university. Actually, he was
involved in a business is since college days. So, he has already experiences to start up his business.
When his in university, he has done a variety of business to accommodate their life at university. For exa
mple, he sold clothes that are a symbols of Kelantan. This shirt is sells for students especially from
Kelantan. Besides that, he became a supplier of Nasi Kerabu Ayam at university. Nasi Kerabu is
synonymous with the people of Kelantan. He also run a car rental service to students. The rental car
business is to provide facilities to students at the university. He also providing bus service to facilitate the
students back to the village. His family and his own experiences when study has made motivation for him
to start up his business which remains until now.

GOALS
Every that made sure had sure that want to have goals to achieved. Likes Encik Ismail, he also
have goals to achieved in his business. He told that he wants to be the first drinking water company in
Kelantan based on Islam. He stated that he wanted to make the company based on the concept of healthy
drinking water and his drinking products mixed with zam zam water. He wants to make sure every muslims
can feel the zam zam water even thougt did not up to holy land, Mecca. Besides that, he wants to ensure
the Muslims cooperate in suppoting and promoting Islamic products. He said Islamic products has a bright
future and far if have the cooperatin of the Muslim community itself in developing Islamic products. He also
said that tired if only one individual who seeks to further develop Islamic product. So, he wants people
especially Muslims get up and cooperation in supporting Islamic products. In addition, he said to make the
company bigger changes the name of company to cooperative. At 3 month ago, his company already
changes the name. The real names of the company is Nanie’s Marketing already changes to Koperasi
Nanie’s Niaga Kelantan Berhad to become bigger.

RESOURCES.
Resources obtained by Mr. Ismail Bin Hassan before starting a business is of Mara (Majlis Amanah
Rakyat). He joined MARA for 9 months and is under the guidance of the vendor. In the seventh month, Mr.
Ismail was opened with the help of a loan from MARA RM250 000. This capital needed to fund the salaries
of employees, equipment and machinery. He also analyzes the business environment in Kelantan before
marketing his product, namely water Nanie's Drinking Water. The next source of supply of raw materials
such as workers who can be trained to the extent possible in handling the product. Mr Ismail also has
created a product that is only used by him as a manufacturer of air, which is typical for the blue bottle
Kelantan alone. He gets water from the Zam Zam Jaafar District, owner of Zam Zam Water Company
located Pondok Pasir Tumboh that , mixed with the drinking water produced by his factory and so created a
new product Air Syifa. Products manufactured by the Nanie's Drinking water is also different from other
people's products, which is the leading product in blue water bottle and the overall product is a blue bottle.
This strategy has maintained Nanie's Drinking Water in the market.

NETWORKING

Nanie's Drinking Water has a network of relationships with company Zam Zam water that is a
major supplier in the issue of drinking water. Next in cooperation with FELDA in water projects produce
drinking water label. In addition, the network with the series Vida Hotel, Flora Hotel, Majlis Agama Islam
Kelantan (MAIEK), a course that takes pilgrims to the drinking water supply Nanie's Drinking Water. Next
the circuit with the National Savings Bank throughout the state. Nanie's Drinking Water also sells drinking
water to offices and schools throughout the state. Perhap drinking water demand is very encouraging.

CONTROLLING AT THE EARLY STAGE

Although Encik Ismail has the number of workers limited to 13 workers, he controls his business
by setting standard and systems to ensure customers satisfaction which is to improve the production
standard to diversity the production of beverages like air pengantin to the wedding ceremony. Air syifa is
good for health. Significant differences in the control of his business is to innovate by changing his drinking
bottle on blue. It can distinguish its drinking water produced by other companies.

FILL THE WATER WITH NEW BOTTLE DESIGN

After that, control arried out by the company’s marketing Nanie’s is to keep cleaness always. This includes
hygiene among its own workers. It is to ensure his customers to keep buy his products.

Regulations on the job is the workers must wear gloves, masks and scraft. This is to ensure the
company can ensure the syariat of islam that emphasizes cleanliness.

RISK ORIENTATION AT THE EARLY START UP

At the early the Nanie’s company establishment, it is not be denied that there are risks that Encik
Ismail had to face. The risk that he had to face is there are many drinking water company was
establishment . At the same time, Encik Ismail had to competed with other drinking water company to
marketed his products. Beside that, Encik Ismail also admitted having a little bit troubles at early stage of
his products operation Nanie’s marketing. Although, that is not be a big problem to him to continue and
expand his drinking water company.

The next problems is lack of worker that Encik Ismail had to face. Nanie’s drinking water company
also have their own problem at the early company establishment. The problem that he had to face is lack of
worker. For example, a few of his worker not stay long because among them there are some students are
waiting to further their study. Among of them doing temporary work to earn money for further their study.

In addition, the risk is marketing. At early Nanie’s products marketing, his company had to
compete with others company from other ethic. But the most big challenges chinese entrepreneurs. At the
moment, there are a lot of chinese entrepreneur conquered the business nowday. But in Kelantan, malay
entrepreneur are accepted by malay community.

Next, the capital to start the business Encik Ismail had to make loan with MARA it is about
RM2500. After he got the loan from the MARA, En Ismail was start his business with do some sending to a
few government agencies such as school and some carnival. However En Ismail had face the problem
which do not have enough money to make capital fund.

BUSINESS PLAN AND PREPARATION

Business plan and preparation is important before starting the business. When Encik Ismail decide
to establish Nanie’s drinking water company, he only make a draft business plan for run in small business.
With small capital he only start the business without uncomplete business plan. But, he never gives up to
venture in this business. Creadibility and strong sprit that he has lead his business expand more
widespread.

For those entrepreneur who was first involved in this drinking water company, Encik Ismail really
takes it this seriously which is make a early preparations. Before Encik Ismail venture in this drinking water
company business, he will make the observations, refrences and preparation before made the decision. He
also educated his workers to be a dicipline and dedicated during they are working. To ensure the best
quality of the products, Encik Ismail was sent his workers to attend the courses about beverage of food. To
ensure his company achieve the company target operation.

Randomly, we always taught and have negative thinking about drinking water company that belong
to malay entrepreneurs. Actually, people think that drinking water company belong to malay do not have
good quality and good for healthy. Many people outside do not give support to malay entrepreneurs.
Meanwhile , with the operation standard (S.O. P) managemaent, certificity of Halal by JAKIM. Cleanliness,
WIFI and customers service. As a good entrepreneurs, he deserve to the right in terms of quality and
quantity.

By performe various type of drinking water such as syifa water and bridal water, this company was
expand to East Cost such as Terengganu and Pahang. The drinking water from the Nanie’s company is
very special because it is contain zam-zam water prayers and selected surah prayed by ustaz at Islamic
studies centre in Kelantan.

Nanies Marketing also doing some marketing strategies which is they only use the blue bottle in the
product. In addition, the community outside can make a differences between other drinking water
company. The drinking water that the company use also different from other company because they only
use ph 7 water, and this good for our healty.

E. CONCLUSION

As we know, many people have involves himself into the entrepreneur. But no all the entrepreneurs
will be successful in her/ his business. Sometimes many risk they have to face before he reached the
successful in business. Many research have be done before that many reason why the entrepreneur
successful and failed on his business. For the successful business, the factor is:

 The knowledge about business


 The interesting on business well
 Discipline in managing the business
 Focus on business
 Strategy in Business
 Teamwork

Although, sometimes entrepreneur will be failed on his business. That a lots of reason can be
define. Failed because of:

 The business doesn’t match with self


 Too rush for variant the business
 Not have supporter from the customer
 Demography
 Doesn’t have to compete with other entrepreneurs

Actually to involves in business, we need to understand what is the business. Then we can
practical the knowledge and can give benefits with our business. But sometimes, the interesting in business
should give you more chances to growth your business.

An entrepreneur must also have characteristics or entrepreneurial behavior can be disciplined ,


resilient and always think of something to remain competitive and viable . These features may or naturally
to entrepreneurs or to be acquired and developed. Entrepreneurs themselves , who must decide whether
he wants to have this feature or not .

So from the entrepreneur that I interviews, Encik Ismail bin Hassan we have a lot of benefits from
him. He has tell that, interest on business can make you happy with every business that you do. Then we
can learn to be more independent with student lifes. This because, since at university encik Ismail has been
told about how he can get the money to survives his life in university. Once is he doing some business for
get the money. Many business that he do such as rent car, rent a bus for student back the village, selling
clothes and other.

Next is the entrepreneur has advice our group if want to choose the business, we need to choose
the business who can more needle by society. For the first is food, as we know people can’t live without the
food and water. Food are the requirement for the people survive his life. Next is education. This because
education is important nowadays. Many thing can we sell in education such as a book, stationery, and
others. Lastly is healthy. The healthy is one of the most important business nowadays. this business can
make the entrepreneur more have a lot of profit. The product based on healthy is cuh as water, supplement
and others.

Then from the experience that the entrepreneur have done before, we get more motivation to
follow his career. This is because we to be a successful person, we need get the role model. For we encik
Ismail is the good roles model, he was a good leader on his company to make his company run smoothly.
Then he was a creative person because he know to variant the product and lastly the know how to divide
time with family and his career.

Lastly, we got very good information about the entrepreneur profile and we know how to manage
business in Islamic. That was a good experience that we have to involves in our study, especially in subject
behavior entrepreneur.
