Name: Fatma Altenaiji Grade CCSS Math Strand: Unit 11: Fractions
Level: 3 Lesson: comparing fractions

CCSS Standards: How to compare between fractions with different nominator and denominator

Main Lesson Aims (Concepts, Procedures, & Processes):

- Students will be able to recall the multiplication table orally by the butterflies' game
- Students will be able to compare between different fractions by using the butterfly strategy
- Students will be able to assess the comparing sign between two fractions by the assessment sheet

Materials:
teacher books Page 632- 633

Less than When a number is smaller than another

Greater than When a number is bigger than another

Equal to When two numbers are equally in value

Students’ Prior Knowledge:

The students know the mathematics signs to compare between numbers < , > , =
Possible Problems and Misconceptions: problem in technology "data show"
Misconception: to multiply between numbers after connected them by cross line as butterfly strategy

Solutions: plan B, butterfly flashcards, and worksheet assessments

Misconception solution: lead the students to put the multiplication sign in the top middle to remember
multiplying the 1st fraction nominator with the 2nd fraction denominator as butterfly strategy
LESSON PLAN

Lesson Schedule
Targeted teacher questions to promote HOTS: Good morning! How are you? we have 4 butterflies here that
want you to give them the right answers of multiplication table to lead them for the princess butterfly.
Well done beautiful butterflies! Who will tell me what is the answer of multiplying this? Clap your hand for
them! I will mark for group leaders and they will mark for you later.
Student communication and use of math language : The answers of multiplication table questions, the
mathematics signs to compare between the fraction (greater than, less than, equal)

Engage (warm up, review prior knowledge): time:

-Teacher will write the day, date, at the board. (2 mins)
15
- Teacher will warm up the students to the lesson title with the butterfly's story game of the
multiplication table. this game will be in groups, the group who answer the question will directly go
to stick it in board beside the princess big butterfly. once all 4 butterflies' in board. students will get
to open the big butterfly and see the title of the lesson. (4 mins)

-Teacher will write the title of the lesson, and the learning objective in the board. (1mins)

-Teacher will present a power point to monitor the students for the lesson answering strategy which
is the butterfly strategy. In the power point, students with the teacher will recall the mathematics
signs that used in math to compare between numbers. (4 mins)

-Teacher will explain the butterfly strategy that will use to compare between fractions, monitor it
with some practice in the slides to helps students understand the basic concept to compare (4 mins)

Core (introduce and practice new concepts & procedures):

20
-In the core part of lesson teacher will ask the students to open their books page 632, she will open
the book in the data show as well. teacher will read the first question and participate student to
answer it, then in the second page teacher will ask students to answer question from (2-5)
individually. She will mark for the group's leaders and the group's leaders will mark for other
students in each group. (10 mins)

-after that, teacher will explain the number line of the book page 633. Students then will work in
groups to answer questions from (6 – 8) teacher will tell that in this group work one student in
group will read the question for the group and they will participate together to answer (10 mins)

Close (wrap up, discussion, brief review activity or assessment):

-Teacher will complete page 634 last two questions with student participating for answer (3 mins) 10
- Teacher will distribute an assessment worksheet of comparing some fractions, that it helpful to
see if students understand the concept of the lesson or not. (5 mins)
-Teacher will mark it, ask students to keep it, close their books and be ready to leave (2 mins)
