Lesson Plan

Lesson : Amines (II)

Aim :

To study chemical tests for aniline.

Learning Outcomes :

By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:

• describe a chemical test for aniline

• describe the reaction of primary amines with nitrous acid

• explain the formation of an azo compound via a coupling reaction.

Assumed prior knowledge :

Students should already be familiar with :

1. the nomenclature and structure of amines

2. the structure of aniline and phenol.

Underlying Principles

1. Making the invisible, visible.

2. Enabling students to know what to look for.

Differentiation

Questions in the student notes are designed to enable all students to complete the activity.
The pop-up answers are provided for the students to view when they have considered their
responses. Worksheet questions include questions that require recall, understanding and
application of the new concepts learned.

Development of Lesson :

No. Steps Strategy Resources

1 Set Induction.
(Ascertaining prior • Teacher to get students to recall the
knowledge and nomenclature and structure of amines.
introducing lesson • Teacher to point out lesson objectives for
topic for the day). the day.

2 Student Activity Teacher to go through Activity 1 with • Courseware

the students.

Activity 1 : Chemical tests

Students get to view the use of bromine

water as a chemical test for aniline. They
also get to view the formation of an azo
dye from phenylamine.

3 Evaluation • Students to answer questions in the • Worksheet

Worksheet Answers

1. Chemical tests

1. 1 a. Aniline NH2

Ethanamine CH3CH2NH2

b. i. Ethanamine

ii. Red litmus paper turns blue.

c. Add bromine water.

Aniline decolourises bromine water and forms a white precipitate.
Ethanamine does not give the above changes.

1.2 a. Add sodium carbonate solution.

4-Aminobenzoic acid reacts to give off carbon dioxide that forms a white
precipitate with lime water. Ethyl 4-aminobenzoate does not give the
above change.

b. Dissolve the compounds in dilute HCl.

Butanamine dissolves but 1-butanol does not.

c. Add bromine water.

Aniline decolourises bromine water and forms a white precipitate but
phenylmethanamine does not.

1.3 a. A and B

b. C

c. i. A bright yellow precipitate is formed.

ii. Coupling reaction

d. B
