Hosansky, D. (2014, July 25). Future of cars. CQ Researcher, 24, 625-648. Retrieved

from http://library.cqpress.com/

In this database article it talks about how driving cars could make us safer on the

road. It says, “Equipped with radars, cameras and other tools, cars can detect when a

front-end collision is about to occur.” It also goes on in telling the reader that in future

years that vehicle to vehicle communication will be possible. That in turn will tell people

our direction, speed, and position relative to each other. Let’s say if lots of people where

at a light then the DOT would keep the light green for longer the article say. This would

prevent things such as traffic accidents and jams.

But many would say it is the invasion of our privacy by letting the government

know our location always and keeping an eye on us such as the term big brother.

In conclusion the article has good points such as reducing traffic accidents but, is

it worth the government keeping a eye on us. I say yes to that point, but I am

going to add another obstacle. What about terrorist or other governments?

Terrorist could hack these vehicles and make them crash for say or turn of the

safety measures to create terror. Other government could do that to but also they

would use it to see what people in other country are doing at that particular time.

It is something to consider when deciding is it worth it.

The peer reviewed article above is what I believe is a good Idea to what

we need to do to sure up the public on self-driving cars or automated cars. It

says we humans must take test to be able to drive and there should be a test for

the self-driving cars as well to make sure they are safe. I know that you can’t give

a car the same test that us people take. what we need to do is to give a test more

like an inspection of the vehicle to make sure that it is safe for people to ride in.

We need to make sure that it cannot be hacked, or we used to monitor us by the

government to invade our privacy. In some ways this article wants the idea of

people riding in self driving cars to happen, but he also wants to protect us form

those people who wish us to harm or from computer errors. So there should be

measures in place to protect people in the future. This source was use full in my

research because it showed me what need to be done to protect people and how

it is some what of a unbiased article because it accepts the idea of self-driving

cars but also questions it.

“Road Crash Statistics.” ASIRT, asirt.org/initiatives/informing-road-users/road-safety-

facts/road-crash-statistics.

The website article above talks about how many accidents happen each year in

the world and in the US. How dose this relate to self-driving cars? It shows how we need

to make our roads safer for us and for the next generation for people to drive on. It says in

the article in the US alone 37,000 people die each year, and not only that 2.35 million

people are injured because of accidents. Why so many you ask? It is because of a lot of

reason such as drunk driving, human error, weather, and texting/distracted driving. A

solution to fix all of these problems is that we need self-driving cars in some form or
Black 4

fashion. On drinking and driving issue that many people die form each year either the

drunk driver or the innocent victim. If they had a automated car such as the google car

they would not need to worry because it is not the drunk that is driving it is the car that is.

Which would save thousands of live just on this point alone but also would save us from

paying tickets. Another good issue is texting and driving. With a self-driving car you

would not have to look at the road to drive you could text and just let the car do it for

you. The article was useful in my research because it showed me a reason why we need

self driving car but also showed me how many people in the us are getting hurt every

year because of accidents

This article is from a popular news source called the Washington post. In the

article it talks about wyamo or known as Georgia’s self-driving car project said that a

pilot program in Atlanta. In this pilot program they will use their technology to drive

Petterbilt class 8 trucks loaded with cargo drive to Georgia data centers. This is quite

scary in some ways because there is a difference between a self-driving car and a self-

driving big rig going down the highway at 70 plus miles per hour. If something where to

mess up several people on the road could get hurt from a out of control big rig. The

company has to make sure they accompany for so many changes such as braking

distance, weight, weather changes to roads, etc... A 18 wheeler is massive and takes a lot

longer to break than a regular car so they would have to include that in the machine as
Black 5

well as its breaking distance changes by what it is haling in the back it could be heavy or

light so it needs to be able to monitor that. This test in my option is just going to fast for

normal people in some ways because self-driving cars have not fully come out or been

accepted by people yet. So what I am saying here is that Atlanta is not a good place to go

to for a little bit in my option not just because of the traffic either. The article was some

what useful because it provided an example of how the government is allowing progress

of self-driving cars even though it may be a bit to fast.

You’ve got some really great articles that discuss a wide range of issues for your topic on

self-driving cars. I especially found the last one very interesting because I hadn’t heard of this

test going on, and you’re right, Atlanta is a strange place to do it since it has really bad traffic.

All of your sources need more evaluation, and some need usefulness, but you’ve done a great job

of summarizing the sources. I can really tell that you read and understood all of your sources,

and that you’ve gone beyond them by including provoking questions to think about the source in

a different way. Make sure to go through and check your grammar. A good rule of thumb is out a

comma where you take a break in a sentence, so like after “so”, “in conclusion”, and so on. You

may want to make sure that the website article works for the website source, because I got the

impression that it wasn’t supposed to be an article. The writing style in this is great because it’s

really engaging for the reader and you’re able to give your opinions on the sources as well. I’ve

mentioned a couple interesting topics to look up for this, but you could continue your research

into companies who are designing and manufacturing the self-driving cars. What are they doing

to test safety?
