Introduction
The Datalog 3 system will connect directly to an RS232 I/O port on a Europlex Ltd., 3GS or Aplex
control panel (via a suitable 5V/RS232 convertor). The system uses the Esco command codes to
control the operation of the panels by the Datalog.
The Datalog maps and interprets the Europlex alarm inputs as standard Datalog zones, where each
Europlex zone represents a single Datalog zone. Europlex internal events such as battery problem,
cabinet tamper, communication failure etc., are also reported via the Datalog.
On power up, the Datalog can configure the input types on the 3GS/Aplex if required. The power up
check will also disable unused inputs and redefine any literals present within the APLEX.DAT file. All
of this is automatic.
The input states of all zones are recorded when the Datalog initializes, and from this point, the
Datalog monitors the 3GS/Aplex waiting for alarm events. The panel should be run in `STAND-BY’
mode for normal program operation, with all control originating from Datalog. Should ‘stand-alone’
3GS/Aplex operation be required then this can be achieved by ‘Arming’ the panel(s).
Note connections are shown for 9 or 25 way D-type Connectors at the PC.

The Datalog can now be powered up and will configure the 3GS correctly. If a communication error
is reported by the Datalog, check that the serial wiring is correct and preferably check using a RS232
LED patch box to observe the data signals.

The replicator is an 8-channel RS232 broadcast unit using standard 25-way D-type connectors and
can connect up to 8 panels. The system should be connected as per the following diagram.
The maximum cable distance between the PC and the broadcast unit and between the broadcast
unit and each panel is 15 metres at 9600 Baud. If a longer distance is encountered then line drivers
will be required, using 2 * twisted pair cable between line drivers (ie Belden 8723 or equivalent).

NOTE: The Datalog software is licensed for a fixed number of zones when purchased, do not add
panels to the system without renewing the license to take into account the additional zones. Also
the ASCII text setup file APLEX.DAT sets up the number of connected panels on the network.
LDAC Changes
The connection to the PC is via a LDAC. The wiring connection from the LDAC to the PC remains
unchanged from a single panel system, however the connection from the LDAC to the first Network
card should be made using the terminal numbers shown above. The patch panel on the LDAC
should also be wired as shown.
Cable Distances
Europlex U.K. have stated that the maximum cable length from the PC to the LDAC is 15M. Up to
2KM of cable is allowed between the LDAC and the first Network card, and likewise up to 2KM
between each subsequent Network card.
NOTE 1: On early type Network cards the 8 PIN IC marked U4 must be removed from the LAST
CARD in the daisy chain. Later type Network cards have two relays on the PCB and when these are
used the IC does not require removal. Also with the newer type cards, the relays effectively bypass
the Network card should power be lost, whereas the older type cards would cause a network lock-up.

3GS Operation
In normal operation the 3GS should be in the ‘Stand-by’ mode and acts as a ‘Data Gathering’ device
for the Datalog system. The Datalog monitors all change of states of all inputs, and alarm conditions
are detected and handled by the Datalog computer system. If a 3GS zone input is tampered or
disconnected, this is presented as an alarm condition irrespective of the inhibit condition.
Tamper/Discon alarms can be ‘Reset’ in the normal way on the Datalog PC, but blue flags will be
displayed on the Main Site Plan as a reminder of uncleared faults.
Many 3GS fault conditions are monitored, such as Battery Problem, Cabinet Tamper, Node Tamper
Etc. The Datalog will display such alarms as fault alarms. For Cabinet/Back tampers etc. the Datalog
will automatically silence the 3GS buzzer and clear the alert on the 3GS panel. With cable faults and
similar hardware errors, the Datalog will show the fault alarm as above but leave the 3GS alert active
so that an Engineer will have the information available on the 3GS display. Whilst precise 3GS fault
annunciation is provided by the Datalog, the recording of fault information within the history database
is limited to general fault type information and panel number etc. This is because of the wide
equipment platform with which the Datalog will operate and the vast quantity of differing fault text
descriptions.
The Datalog will also control 3GS node outputs and offer automatic output switching during alarm
conditions or using Technical type inputs or by time of day/day of week. Custom software may also
be available to control outputs for special purposes.
More than 1 3GS panel can be connected to the Datalog using network drivers. If a network 3GS
system is in use then the zones of each 3GS are mapped sequentially into the Datalog alarm
system. (Note: for custom software applications, these numbers can vary)
3GS panel 1 (Panel ID 1) = Zone 1 to 200
3GS panel 2 (Panel ID 2) = Zone 201 to 400 etc.
Should the system grow, and more 3GS panels are required then Contact Cortech Developments to
increase the number of zones for the on site license and increase the number of active panels.
Panel Emulation
Clicking the Europlex button on the Main Screen or Menu Panel, or selecting Tools ! Europlex from
the menus will display a mimic of a 3GS keypad. This option allows checking and modification of a
3gs system through the Datalog system without having to go to the panel. This option should only be
used by persons with knowledge of the operation of the 3GS and may need to consult the Europlex
manual for the codes required.
The screen format will show a mimic of a 3GS keypad, with 2*24 character display and identified
control keys. The display on the keypad will be identical to the display on the selected panel’s
keypad. By default the software will select the first panel that is on-line. If there is more than one
panel, the other panels can be selected by clicking the up/down buttons on the Panel Address box.

tampered or disconnected, this is presented as an alarm condition irrespective of the inhibit
condition. Tamper/Discon alarms can be ‘Reset’ in the normal way on the Datalog PC, but blue flags
will be displayed on the Main Site Plan as a reminder of un-cleared faults.
Many Aplex fault conditions are monitored, such as Battery Problem, Cabinet Tamper, Etc. The
Datalog will display such alarms as fault alarms. For Cabinet/Back tampers etc. the Datalog will
automatically silence the Aplex buzzer and clear the alert on the Aplex panel. With cable faults and
similar hardware errors, the Datalog will show the fault alarm as above but leave the Aplex alert

The Datalog will also control Aplex CLEM outputs and offer automatic output switching during alarm
conditions or using Technical type inputs or by time of day/day of week. Custom software may also
be available to control outputs for special purposes.
More than 1 Aplex panel can be connected to the Datalog using network drivers. If a network Aplex
system is in use then the zones of each Aplex are mapped sequentially into the Datalog alarm
system. (Note: for custom software applications, these numbers can vary)
Should the system grow, and more Aplex panels are required then Contact Cortech Developments to
